It was late in the afternoon when Aiko, on her way home from school, stumbled across something unusual. Walking down the familiar sidewalk, she noticed a small, shivering bundle near the edge of the road. Her curiosity piqued, Aiko approached cautiously. As she got closer, her eyes widened in surprise—it was a tiny dog.
The small, scruffy dog had light brown fur, messy and dirty from being out on the streets. She looked up at Aiko with big, sad eyes that seemed to plead for help. Aiko's heart immediately melted.
"Oh no, poor thing!" Aiko whispered as she crouched down. The little dog, though clearly nervous, wagged her tail weakly and let out a small whimper.
Without thinking twice, Aiko reached out gently and scooped the dog into her arms. The pup felt so light, almost weightless, and Aiko could feel her trembling.
"You're coming home with me," she declared with determination, hugging the little dog close to her chest. "Don't worry, I'll take care of you."
Aiko hurried home, her mind racing with excitement. When she arrived at the apartment, she burst through the door, startling both Kiyotaka and Suzune, who were sitting in the living room enjoying a quiet afternoon.
"Daddy! Mama! Look what I found!" Aiko cried, her voice filled with urgency and excitement as she ran over to them, holding the small dog in her arms.
Kiyotaka raised an eyebrow, his eyes flicking from Aiko to the small, scruffy dog in her arms. Suzune looked equally surprised.
"Aiko, what... where did you find this dog?" Suzune asked, concern in her voice as she stood up and approached her daughter.
"She was on the side of the road! She looked so sad and lonely, I couldn't just leave her there!" Aiko said, her voice a mix of excitement and worry. "Please, can we keep her? She doesn't have a home, and I promise I'll take care of her!"
Suzune glanced at Kiyotaka, her expression softening. The small dog looked up at them, her big eyes pleading as if she understood what was happening. Suzune sighed, her heart already warming to the little creature.
Kiyotaka, ever calm and composed, stood up and walked over to Aiko. He knelt down, taking a closer look at the dog. She was clearly in need of care, her fur tangled and her small body trembling slightly in Aiko's arms.
"You found her on the side of the road?" Kiyotaka asked, his voice soft but steady.
Aiko nodded eagerly. "Yes! I couldn't leave her there, Daddy. She needs a home."
There was a brief moment of silence as Kiyotaka considered the situation. Then, with a faint smile, he looked up at Suzune. "What do you think?"
Suzune smiled softly, her eyes meeting Kiyotaka's before turning back to Aiko. "It looks like she's already found a home," she said gently, reaching out to pet the little dog's head.
Aiko's face lit up with joy. "Does that mean... we can keep her?"
Kiyotaka nodded, his expression softening. "Yes, we can keep her."
Aiko let out an excited squeal and hugged the dog tightly, though careful not to hurt her. "Thank you, thank you! I'll take really good care of her, I promise!"
"What are you going to name her?" Suzune asked, her tone playful as she watched her daughter's excitement.
Aiko thought for a moment, then her face lit up with an idea. "I'm going to name her Sae!"
"Sae?" Kiyotaka asked, raising an eyebrow slightly.🤔
"Yeah! It sounds cute, and she's cute, so it's perfect!" Aiko explained with a big smile, petting Sae gently.
Suzune laughed softly, reaching out to stroke the dog's fur. "Sae it is, then. But remember, Aiko, taking care of a dog is a big responsibility."
"I know, Mama! I'll feed her and walk her and make sure she has everything she needs!" Aiko promised, her voice full of determination.
As if sensing that she was now part of the family, Sae let out a small, happy bark, her tail wagging a little more enthusiastically. She snuggled into Aiko's arms, clearly relieved to be in a warm, loving home.
"Well, the first thing we should do is give her a bath," Kiyotaka said, standing up. "She looks like she's had a rough time out there."
Aiko nodded eagerly. "I'll help!"
They spent the next hour carefully washing Sae, who, despite her initial nervousness, seemed to enjoy the warm water and the attention. Aiko giggled as she helped Suzune dry Sae's fur with a towel, and even Kiyotaka couldn't help but smile as the little dog shook herself dry, spraying water everywhere.
By the time Sae was clean and dry, she looked like a completely different dog—her fur was soft and fluffy, and she had a new energy about her. She ran around the apartment, her tail wagging happily as she explored her new home.
"She's so cute!" Aiko exclaimed, watching Sae dart around the living room.
Suzune smiled, sitting down on the couch beside Kiyotaka. "She seems happy here."
Kiyotaka nodded in agreement, watching as Sae finally settled down on the floor beside Aiko. "She does."
Aiko sat down beside Sae, petting her gently. "Thank you, Daddy. Thank you, Mama. I'm so happy we can keep her."
Kiyotaka and Suzune exchanged a glance, both of them smiling softly. It was moments like this—seeing their children happy, their family growing—that made everything worthwhile.
"We're happy too, Aiko," Suzune said, her voice warm. "Sae is part of our family now."
Aiko beamed, her heart full as she looked down at Sae, who was now fast asleep at her feet. "I love her so much already."
Kiyotaka placed a hand on Aiko's head, gently ruffling her hair. "Just remember to take good care of her, okay?"
"I will, Daddy," Aiko promised, her eyes sparkling with joy.
As the evening wore on and the house settled into a peaceful quiet, Sae remained curled up beside Aiko, already fitting in as though she had always been there. Suzune and Kiyotaka sat together on the couch, watching their daughter and their new furry family member with content smiles.
Their family had grown once more, and in that moment, everything felt right.
