Prologue

"I think I'm ugly and nobody wants to love me. Just like her, I wanna be pretty."

The young girl belted out the lyrics of the 2NE1 song. Her short, dark hair flew in every direction as she bounced her head to the beat.

Park Hanbyeol was by no means ugly, but she always felt that thought tugging on her heart. Light red patched her face, and a small mole graced the bottom of her left eye.

The other horror was her hair. As if she'd just woken up and dragged herself to the karaoke room, her black hair was undecided, and her bangs were spikes that barely let her eyes show.

Hanbyeol hated her looks but she never knew what to do about it. Luckily, she wasn't bullied badly at school. Her invisibility only caused shoulder bumps when passing by or strange looks. Dohee also kept her plenty of company, such as today's weekend outing.

When Hanbyeol effortlessly finished her go-to song, she excused herself to the bathroom. Her shy friend nodded and searched for the next song. Hanbyeol pushed open the door carelessly, the lingering tune playing on her lips.

Bang.

Her eyes widened. The door rebounded earlier than it was meant to. Quickly stepping out and closing the door, Hanbyeol was shocked to see a boy standing there.

He seemed to be a middle school student, around the same age as her, if not older. With dark hair and a graceful aura, he was handsome albeit quite emotionless. Despite his forehead bruising red, he wasn't shooting lasers at Hanbyeol. Instead, she felt awkward from the coldness behind his eyes.

"I'm so sorry!" Hanbyeol bowed down at once.

"Mm," the boy dismissed.

He walked past her, harshly answering the phone call from his dad that he was procrastinating. It was like an icy breeze flying by. Hanbyeol watched him go around the corner and then she returned to her path in the opposite direction.

What a shame though; she thought he was quite good-looking. He had potential, until he didn't.

A beautiful male voice wafted out from the room a few doors down, causing Hanbyeol to pause. Her eyes were blessed with two cute boys about the same age as her. The skinny boy who was singing locked gazes with her, his parted hair and ear-piercing reminding her of her crushes in K-dramas.

Hanbyeol quickly turned away and headed to her nearly forgotten destination. She was young and had always focused on her studies and hobbies rather than makeup and boys.

When she was done in the bathroom, she went back to her room with her friend. They sang a few more songs before Dohee had to go home.

Now on her own, the other middle school girl stopped by a convenience store. Hanbyeol's older sister, Hanbin, was two years older than her and finishing her academy class soon, so they could go home together as they often did.

Browsing the shelves of food, Hanbyeol picked up a bowl of Shin Ramyun. She then spotted the peel sausages on a 1+1 sale.

"Nice, I can get two!" she spoke to herself. "Or maybe four – and it'll be paying for two. Or should I just get two?"

At the cash register, she laid out her Shin Ramyun, banana milk, and four sausages. Once Hanbyeol made her meal, she sat at the bench to eat, her earphones accompanying her with some Fall Out Boy music. She stared out the window to people watch.

A group of pretty middle school girls. A good-looking couple who looked to be in their twenties. A high school girl with gorgeous, wavy hair.

Hanbyeol's jaw dropped slightly. She had never been so mesmerised by someone's visuals before, but for some reason, she was jealous of her hair. Perhaps she should try parting it like that girl.

With that thought, three familiar boys entered the convenience store. Hanbyeol's eyes instinctively followed the noise. She ducked her head when she recognised the rude boy, then questioned why she did so.

As the group of friends walked behind her, she finished her noodles and two sausages, trying to ignore their presence. A certain boy noticed the song on her phone, however, and he smiled at her taste.

"Hanbyeol," a voice called out.

The young girl looked up to see her older sister waving at her from outside the window. She lit up, rushing to meet her sister. The moment was but a fleeting encounter of strangers.

Seeing the pretty haired girl didn't make Hanbyeol decide to change her appearance, but it definitely contributed to her stronger desire of being beautiful.

Don't forget her mum's habitual pleas for her to put effort into her looks, especially before Hanbyeol goes on stage as the guitarist for her school band. While she always pretended to listen, she now actually did.

Going to a concert a month later and seeing the performers look so good made her jealous. Hanbyeol always thought her short hair looked cool, but when she saw a photo of her on stage, she almost looked like a beggar with her oily, messy hair. She wanted great photos so that she would be remembered better as a guitarist.

It was time for a change.

Yay! I'm finally starting to write again! I don't know if it'll be as good as my other one since I was more passionate about that one but I still like this one. This also follows the drama more closely and mostly word for word of what they say, so it'll take longer.

Thank you to @julianamusic2 for the story idea and getting me to write again!! Instead of having the OC put on heaps of makeup though, I wanted to do something different, so she'll focus on her hair more.

Thank you so much for reading! Please vote and comment :)
