Spring

A sunny spring morning was lying upon the rustic looking house. A very old house we must say, with rusty doors and lots of dark blue painted windows. The once red brick the house had is now a very dark color covered with bushes of some sorts. The bells from the church down the street can be heard in this old house and so the children playing in the park nearby. Here lived Mr. Bick. A gentleman in his 70's living with his only friend, Peps the cat.

And so, Mr. Bick thought it would be nice to begin his day with a walk through Fading Park, down to 78th avenue and back to the house. He took his hat and cane, he put on his Oxford shoes and his dark green velvet coat and after saying goodbye to the cat, he headed towards the park. He started walking with slow and small steps. The sun was still shy and the air was still cold. But that did not stop Mr. Bick from smelling something delicious. After looking around he noticed that the sweet-savory smell came from a bakery. But not any bakery, it was Lilly's bakery. A very old friend of Mr. Bick who makes an amazing cherry pie. He thought it would be nice to say hello to his friend and so he walked into the bakery. Pam, Lily's niece waved at Mr. Bick from over the counter. He nodded slowly going towards her. Mr. Bick asked Pam about his friend, but Lilly was out of town. After talking with Pam he asked for a slice of the cherry pie.

After he left, he crossed the street, went over the Hammon's Bridge and stopped at the park's entrance looking around. Some kids were getting ready for a running race and a family was walking their four dogs not too far. In the distance even though you couldn't see them, you could hear the kids screaming at the playground. Old trees with no leaves, the morning sunlight and the bird's singing made Mr. Bick feel happy again, after a long time. He walked to the bench near the fountain and opened the box where the slice of cherry pie was. He picked it up and started eating it with small bites. The sweet and sour taste made him joyful. A man in a suit passed by him in a rush with a bouquet of flowers. This reminded Mr. Bick of him in his youth. He appeared at the door of his late wife in a suit with a bouquet of flowers asking her to be his wife. She was highly impressed by his charming persistence and so she accepted. He remembered the good days they had together and when he got to the bad ones, he finished his slice of pie.

Happy yet bitter he looked up at the fountain. A little rainbow was formed on top of it after the sun rays showed up. And that's when he realized. That's what it is at the end of the rainbow. An old man eating a slice of cherry pie! And with small and slow steps he headed towards his house.
