Sydney Noelle Harper
"You know this little party going on out here is for you." My soon to be former assistant peeked into my office"I know. I'll be out in a minute." I replied, typing away on my computer
"I know you can't be working. Today's your last day." She opened the door wider, coming all the way in
I came to New York 7 years ago to strengthen my craft, journalism. But I've been offered a job as chief editor for The Fader magazine in LA, which is where I'm originally from.
"Just finishing up my last article." I said
"Chris on the line. You want me
to put him through?" She asked"Yeah. Put him through." I smiled at her before she left out
Shortly after she left out the light on my office phone dinged and I picked up "What's up, Breezy?"
"Hey, what's up, girl?" He replied "You knew I wasn't
about to let you leave without publishing that article, right?" He askedMy longtime best friend, Chris, is an A&R at RCA records, and one of his new artist just dropped a song that he wrote. I was in charge of writing the article and publishing it, and his eager behind never fails to remind me about publishing it.
"I was supposed to- I know you don't have me
on speaker, do you?" I asked out of curiosity, knowing he's usually in meetings around this time of day"No, no. I mean, yeah, but it's just me." He fumbled over his words "So, how's the article coming?"
"Apologize first." I know he's lying. He's a horrible liar. It's probably a room full of his board members listening in
"Huh?"
"Apologize first. You know the routine." I twirled in my chair
He lightly chuckled, realizing I had caught on to him "Uh, I'm sorry for being a self-centered, uh, ass."
"Actually change that to impatient, arrogant ass. " I decided to make him work for it
"Ok, you can't be adding extras here, Syd."
"Tell me something. Does Simon know you wet the bed till you were 12?" I smirked, embarrassing him
He sucked his teeth "Ok, ok, I'm sorry for being a self-centered, arrogant..."
"No rhythm having" I added onto the apology
"You crazy, no, no, you...No, I ain't crossing that line."
"Just say it, Chris. I got your article in my hands. I'll put it at the bottom of the stack. Come on." I playfully threatened
"All right." He sighed "No——No rhythm having ass who's taking advantage of his friendship with the beautiful, smart, the giving music writer of The New York Times."
"New editor of The Fader magazine" I teased, adding more
He sighed "The new editor of The Fader magazine, for his personal professional advancement. Are you happy now?"
"Mm-hmm. I think you've got another hit on your hands." I complimented
"Thank you, Syd." I could hear the smile in his voice
"Couldn't wait one week for the review to come out, huh?"
"You know I couldn't." He replied "So what's the deal? You gonna be home in time for Usher's party?"
"Yes, I'll be home for the party. My bags are packed."
"Cool. Cool. I cannot wait to see you, big time."
"You too big head. See you."
"All right. Bye, Syd."
This is going to be somewhat of a short story. Only about 12 chapters, but let me know how y'all like it so far.
