melting by kali uchis played softly on tate's speaker which was probably the worst song that could play right now. she was already confused with butterflies flying around her stomach without a cutesy love song with lyrics that reminded her of matt playing.
she groaned, turning onto her stomach and shoving her head into the pillow. she genuinely didn't think she had ever felt so confused. matt sturniolo hated her and he wasn't shy about it. he bullied her, made fun of her and pretended to not even know her. he had barely sent her a kind glance since that first day of high school, and he definitely hadn't had a full conversation with her.
so why had he suddenly pulled her away from everybody? why had he given her his hoodie? why had he asked who hurt her? why did he seem so angry to know it was harlow?
so many questions ran through her mind and she couldn't work out how to shut it off. she sat up, her legs swinging over her bed as she looked down at the hoodie. it was plain black on the front, but STURNIOLO was wrote in huge letters across the back.
of course matt had a hoodie with his own name on it.
she hadn't even know it said his surname on the back until she was sitting on the bus and somebody behind was tapping her shoulder. she took her earphones out, expecting somebody to say something mean to her, and they asked why she was wearing matt's hoodie. she said he had given her it, and the person said she was lying and had probably stolen it.
she put her earphones back in at that point.
honestly, she probably would've preferred if she did steal it because at least then she wouldn't be sitting on the edge of her bed thinking about matt sturniolo and why he had suddenly decided to do a good thing for her.
ivy by frank ocean suddenly came on and she looked over towards her speaker because was this a prank or something? why was every single song reminding her of her and matt? she suddenly felt her heart grow heavy and sighed at the lyrics.
i thought that i was dreaming when you said you loved me. i had no chance to prepare, i couldn't see you coming.
she stood up, moving towards the small balcony her room had. she pushed open the sliding door and took a seat on the chair, pulling her legs from the deck and putting them under her. she lent into her knees, the feeling of sadness overwhelming her as she thought.

''tate! tate! tate!'' the ten year old boy sang excitedly. she wasn't even facing matt, but he knew the back of his best friend's head. he had almost missed recess because he was in trouble with the teacher for whispering in the lesson, but he still had a few minutes to hang out and play with the girl. he raced across the playground, still singing her name. ''tate!''
