Car chase
The car sped through the narrow streets, weaving in and out of traffic as Adam pushed the vehicle to its limit. The roar of the engine filled the cabin, along with the tense atmosphere as the black sedan continued to follow closely behind.
"Can you lose them?" Yoko asked from the back seat, her eyes flicking nervously between Adam and the rearview mirror.
"I'm trying," Adam responded, determination sharp in his voice as he swerved around a slower car. The sedan stuck with them, refusing to back off.
"Drive faster!" Mikey shouted from Yoko's embrace, her small hands gripping Yoko's shirt tightly.
Adam's jaw clenched. "I'm going to drop you fast and try to draw them off," he said, the plan forming in his mind. "You'll be harder to track on foot."
"What? Why can't we just go to the house?!" Mikey demanded, frustration evident as her eyes darted between Adam and the relentless car chasing them.
"They're too close behind us. We'd be vulnerable when we reach the gate," Adam replied, his voice tight with focus. The streets blurred around them as he took another sharp turn, barely avoiding a parked truck.
...And Mikey could get caught in the crossfire if a fight breaks out in front of the compound, Yoko thought, her mind racing through possible scenarios. She locked eyes with Mikey and gave her a firm nod. "Get ready, Mikey."
Mikey's face scrunched up with worry. "You're throwing me from a moving car again?" she asked, a mixture of frustration and dread in her voice.
Adam didn't look back but added quickly, "I'm slowing down this time." He took a tight corner, and as the car's speed decreased just enough, Yoko saw her chance.
"Now!" Yoko shouted as she leaped from the car, holding Mikey close to her chest. They hit the ground hard but rolled quickly into the shadows, using a nearby wall for cover. The sedan roared past them, oblivious to the fact that its targets were no longer in the car.
Yoko quickly peeked around the corner, her heart pounding. "Let's—" Mikey began, ready to move, but Yoko yanked her back, covering the little girl's mouth with her hand. "Wait," she whispered, her eyes narrowing as another car crept by slowly, its windows tinted, scanning the area. A second tail... Yoko's mind raced. Did they see us?
The car drove past without stopping, leaving Yoko to exhale a long, relieved breath. "That was too close," she muttered, her nerves still buzzing with adrenaline.
"Who was that?! Who would dare?!" Mikey whispered angrily, her face flushed with both fear and fury.
"I don't know," Yoko said quietly, though her thoughts churned with possibilities. But I can guess, she thought, her suspicions tightening in her chest.
Grabbing Mikey's hand, Yoko gave her a reassuring squeeze. "Let's get you home."
Mikey squeezed back, her silent acknowledgment and trust clear in the gesture as they both slipped into the shadows, moving quickly and quietly away from the street.
Back in the compound
Back in the Malisorn compound, Faye was a whirlwind of command, her sharp voice cutting through the air as she directed her men to stay alert. Her posture was tense, the air heavy with anticipation of whatever threat might come their way. The rustling of bushes nearby caught her attention, making her freeze for a moment, her guard immediately up.
Her heart pounded as she turned toward the noise, her hand instinctively reaching for her weapon. But then, Yoko and Mikey emerged from the bushes, and relief washed over her like a tidal wave.
