Chapter Eighteen- Meeting Lisa

Catherine sat in the conference room, the air thick with tension. She adjusted her notes, waiting for Lisa to arrive. The door swung open, and in walked the Secretary of State, her expression serious but composed.

"Dr. Wynter," Lisa greeted, taking a seat across from her. "Thank you for meeting with me on such short notice."

"Of course. I know the situation is urgent," Catherine replied, her voice steady. "What's the latest?"

Lisa took a deep breath. "We've received credible threats against you and those involved in the investigation. The information you've gathered has put a target on your back."

Catherine's brow furrowed. "I'm aware of the risks. That's why we're doing everything we can to stay ahead of this."

Lisa nodded, appreciating Catherine's resolve. "I wanted to discuss our next steps. We need to ensure you're protected while you continue your work. I've arranged for additional security detail, but we need to act quickly."

"Security is important, but I can't let it hinder my work," Catherine said firmly. "The data we have is crucial. If we slow down, we risk losing everything."

"I understand," Lisa said, leaning forward. "But you have to prioritize your safety. If anything happens to you, it jeopardizes the entire operation."

Catherine sighed, contemplating the weight of the situation. "I know, but I can't sit back and wait. We need to move on the information we have, especially about the corrupt officials. If we don't expose them now, we may never get another chance."

Lisa studied her for a moment, seeing the determination in Catherine's eyes. "You're right. We'll need to be strategic. We can coordinate our efforts to ensure you have both the protection you need and the ability to continue your investigation."

"Good. Let's create a plan that allows for both," Catherine said, feeling a surge of determination.

As they began discussing logistics, the conversation flowed easily, both women aware of the stakes. Catherine felt a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that with each step, they were closer to uncovering the truth and bringing justice to those who had suffered.

"Together, we can make this work," Lisa said, her voice steady. "We just need to stay one step ahead."

Catherine nodded. "Agreed. I won't let fear dictate my actions. Let's get to work."

Back at the Headquarter

Catherine stormed into the headquarters, adrenaline still coursing through her veins. She tossed the unconscious man onto the floor, the thud echoing through the room. A few agents turned their heads, eyes widening in surprise.

"Who the hell is that?" one of them asked, rising to his feet.

"A surprise guest," Catherine replied, brushing her hair back as she surveyed the room. "He ambushed me on the way back."

Isaac stepped forward, concern etched on his face. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," she assured him, her voice steady. "Just a little scuffle. But I think this one might have some answers."

The agents moved closer, curiosity piqued. Catherine crouched beside the man, checking him for weapons before flipping him onto his back. His eyes fluttered open, confusion and fear mingling in his gaze.

"Where am I?" he mumbled, groggy.

Catherine leaned in, her expression cold and focused. "You're in a place where you're going to answer some questions. Start talking, and this can go smoothly for you."
