Lila stepped out of the car, her gaze sweeping over the imposing estate that was now supposed to be her home. The iron gates had creaked shut behind her, as though trapping her in this new life. It wasn't just the house—dark and silent under the weight of ancient trees—that unnerved her. It was him.
Ethan.
She hadn't expected him to meet them at the front door, his tall figure leaning casually against the stone pillar. There was something unreadable in his eyes, a flicker of disdain, or maybe amusement. She couldn't tell. Their eyes met, and Lila felt a strange sensation crawling up her spine.
"Lila, this is Ethan," her mother said, smiling awkwardly. "Your stepbrother."
He didn't extend his hand. Instead, he gave a slow, mocking smile, his lips barely moving. "Welcome," he said, his voice as cold as the autumn wind that whipped through the trees.
Lila nodded, saying nothing. She didn't know what to make of him, but she already knew one thing—there was no way this was going to feel like home.
