On the other side of the Atlantic, Percy Jackson was feeling the pressure of heroism in ways he hadn’t anticipated. It had been a year since he and his friends had defeated the giants and restored peace between the gods and the mortals. Camp Half-Blood had settled into a rhythm of relative calm, but the burdens of being a demigod never truly went away.More than that, Percy’s relationship with Annabeth Chase was beginning to show signs of strain. Annabeth had always been brilliant, driven, and respected, but in recent months, her fame had taken on a life of its own. Magazines had run stories about her exploits, calling her the “Architect of Olympus” and the “Heroine of the Half-Bloods.” She had been asked to speak at colleges, give interviews, and even consult on various architectural projects for mortal governments.
Percy, meanwhile, felt left behind. He loved Annabeth with all his heart, but he couldn’t shake the feeling of inadequacy. While she was off changing the world, he remained at camp, training the younger demigods, dealing with minor monsters, and wondering if he still had a place in her life.
The jealousy gnawed at him, though he hated admitting it. It wasn’t that he didn’t want Annabeth to succeed—he was proud of her—but he couldn’t help but feel like he was losing her to a world that no longer needed him.
One evening, after yet another award ceremony where Annabeth had been honored, Percy pulled her aside. “Annabeth, we need to talk,” he said quietly.
Annabeth looked at him with concern, her grey eyes sharp and focused as always. “What’s wrong, Seaweed Brain?”
Percy sighed, running a hand through his messy black hair. “It’s just… I feel like we’re drifting apart. You’re out there, doing all these amazing things, and I’m… I’m just here.”
Annabeth frowned, taking his hand. “Percy, that’s not true. You’re important. You’re a hero—”
“I don’t feel like it anymore,” Percy interrupted, his voice filled with frustration. “You’re becoming this big deal, and I’m… nothing compared to that.”
Annabeth’s expression softened, and she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him close. “You’ll always be my hero, Percy. Always. But… I can’t give up what I’m doing. I’ve worked so hard for this.”
“I know,” Percy whispered, holding her tightly. “And I love that about you. I just… I don’t know how to keep up.”
The conversation left them both feeling unsettled, and Percy knew that things between them weren’t as strong as they once were. But there was no time to dwell on it, because the very next day, something happened that would change everything.
