The air pressure in the room dropped, and Wu Yingying stealthily glanced at Ren Qingyue.
It seemed the cold beauty's expression had grown even colder.
Realizing something belatedly, she subtly confirmed with Yan Zhao, "Can Senior Sister Ren hear us?"
Yan Zhao gasped and looked up at her sister.
Seeing her head down, diligently writing and drawing on the paper just as usual, there was nothing out of the ordinary.
Blinking, she assessed, "Probably not."
Wu Yingying let out a sigh of relief, her heart settling back in her chest, and then said to Yan Zhao, "You can continue."
Yan Zhao nodded and picked up her brush to practice calligraphy again.
With Wu Yingying praising her for being "diligent and studious" beside her, she focused even harder.
Each stroke was carefully considered, showcasing the writing techniques that Ren Qingyue had taught her at their best.
Across the table, Ren Qingyue grew impatient and colored in the turtle she had been drawing until it became a black mess.
Then she crumpled the paper and tossed it into her sleeve.
Unaware of any of this, Yan Zhao quickly finished her task and brought it to Ren Qingyue for review.
"Done so soon?" Ren Qingyue raised an eyebrow and asked, "Did you slack off and not write seriously?"
Yan Zhao replied earnestly, "I was very serious."
"Oh really?"
Ren Qingyue looked down at the characters Yan Zhao had written.
To be honest, Yan Zhao's handwriting had improved considerably.
Compared to the scrawl from a year ago, her current writing could barely be considered proper.
But no matter how Ren Qingyue looked at it, she found it unsatisfactory. After flipping through several pages, she suppressed her displeasure and huffed lightly through her nose, "That'll do."
Yan Zhao felt she had performed quite well today and had expected some praise, but received none.
However, having passed the review, she felt relieved.
Wu Yingying immediately pulled Yan Zhao aside to ask about her experiences as a medicine seeker.
Having never shared her experiences with anyone, Yan Zhao felt it was new and interesting, though she didn't know where to begin.
"Why did the sect leader specifically establish the role of a medicine seeker?" Wu Yingying asked curiously. "What kind of herbs are missing from the sect's repository?"
"These," Yan Zhao said, pulling out her little notebook again to show Wu Yingying.
Wu Yingying took it, slowly flipping through a few pages before quickly turning through several more.
"..."
She fell silent.
After a moment, still in disbelief, she looked at Yan Zhao with wide eyes. "The sect leader sent you to find these herbs?"
Yan Zhao nodded. "Yes."
Wu Yingying looked at Yan Zhao with newfound respect, returning the notebook with both hands, and bowed slightly. "Impressive! No wonder you're the sect leader's disciple; he must have high hopes for you!"
