season 1 episode 2: the places you have come to fear the most

Maddie is at Karen's Cafe waiting on Haley, Karen and Keith to get done so they can leave to watch Luke play his first game on the team.

Maddie notices people out on the street, shouting and making their way towards the school to also watch the game.

"Karen! You ready to go?" Keith asks as Haley is behind Karen putting on her jacket and Maddie is sitting at the counter, she's been ready for the last 5 minutes just waiting on the others.

"Oh, I'm not going. I decided to stay open. I could use the business" Karen replies to Keith. Maddie feels for both Lucas and Karen. For Lucas because he's gonna be a little disappointed his mom didn't make it. And for Karen because it's gotta be hard going back to where it all started.

"You talk to Luke about this?" Keith asks Karen.

"No. But he'll understand" Karen says back.

"Karen-" Keith begins only to be cut off by Haley who is standing by the door with Maddie, "she doesn't want to go. She doesn't want to see her high school sweetheart slash your brother Dan slash the jerk who abandoned Lucas slash the father of Nathan, the team's star player slash my wrists if I hear this story again. Let's go."

"Haley!" Maddie says to her sister, slightly scolding at the last part of her speech.

Haley opens the door for Maddie so they can head out and Keith follows the two young girls out the door so they can head over to watch the game but not before leaving Karen with a "I think you're making a mistake."

Maddie, Haley and Keith get in the car and head towards the school.

Maddie, Haley and Keith finally make it to the school, and step inside the gym. Maddie looks around at all the people, trying to find some seats for them.

She spots some and makes Haley and Keith follow her, they take their seats and wait for the game to begin.

Maddie is sitting and talking with Haley when they hear Dan, Lucas and Nathan's father, also known as Keith's brother, "Keith! Hey. Finally came to see your nephew play, huh, big brother?"

"Yeah. I guess you could say that" Keith replies back to Dan.

Dan passes by the three and finds his own seat, Haley and Maddie share a look before they both turn their attention to Keith who is already looking at them with the same look on his face.

Maddie's attention is then turned towards the court where the team is warming up.

Nathan dunks the ball which causes everyone to cheer, Maddie rolls her eyes at that.

She locks eyes with Nathan, to which she quickly looks away.

Lucas then joins the team on the court, and Maddie notices how nervous he looks and gives him a wide smile, which he returns slightly.

Lucas is followed by another player who locks eyes with Haley, to which Haley slightly blushes. Maddie notices and lightly nudges her sister teasingly.

Haley blushes harder while telling her sister to stop, Maddie lets out a loud laugh, which again attracts the attention of Nathan. They lock eyes again, and this time Maddie holds the stare for quite a while, before finally looking away.

Nathan and a member of the opposite team meet in the middle. The whistle is heard and the game finally begins. Nathan manages to smack the ball to his team, the ball is passed to team members and finally the ball is thrown to Lucas, who doesn't catch it, instead it flies towards the cheerleaders. Maddie winces and luckily the cheerleader, who turns out to be Peyton, manages to move out of the way.
