Chapter 1: Swiping Right
Noah Thompson sat on his worn-out couch in the cramped apartment he shared with two other university students, staring down at his phone. He wasn't sure why he'd let Ben, his best mate, talk him into this. A dating app wasn't exactly his idea of meeting someone. He'd always believed in natural, organic connections—meeting in person, a spark in the air, that moment of knowing. But lately, with classes and work piling up, his social life had taken a nosedive, and so had his opportunities for romance. Still, swiping through endless profiles of women had become a numbing form of entertainment in his few spare moments between his university courses and his part-time job. He wasn't looking for anything serious, just fun, maybe a few casual dates. Something light, something that wouldn't complicate his already packed schedule. Ben's words echoed in his mind. "You're in your twenties, mate! Live a little. London's the perfect place for it—tons of women just like you, not looking for anything serious." Noah sighed, flicking his thumb across the screen, dismissing profile after profile. Each woman seemed more polished and unattainable than the last, yet none sparked any genuine interest. He was about to shut the app down when a profile popped up that made him pause. Aveline Hayes. The profile photo showed a woman who was nothing like the others. There was something regal and confident in the way she posed, a graceful elegance in her smile. She looked like she belonged in one of those glossy business magazines he saw at the checkout counter—sophisticated, polished, and out of his league. Her dark brown hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders, and her blue eyes were bright and captivating, even in a simple photo. But what caught Noah's attention even more than her looks was her profile description. "CEO. London. 38. Lover of wine, travel, and good conversation." Thirty-eight? His thumb hesitated above the screen. Fifteen years older than him. That was... unexpected. Noah had never considered dating someone so much older. What could a woman like her possibly want with someone like him? He was a 23-year-old university student still figuring out his life, while she seemed to have hers fully sorted. A laugh bubbled up in his throat. She was probably looking for someone her age but had widened the age range out of curiosity or boredom. She probably wouldn't even swipe back on him. But as he stared at her picture again, something stirred inside him. A curiosity he couldn't quite shake. "What the hell," he muttered, swiping right before he could change his mind. Across the city, in a penthouse apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Thames, Aveline Hayes sat at her glass dining table, sipping a glass of red wine. The weight of her day pressed heavily on her shoulders. Another grueling round of meetings, financial projections, and negotiations had drained her. As CEO of one of London's most successful tech startups, Aveline was constantly on the go, managing a team, growing her business, and staying one step ahead in the competitive corporate world. But in the quiet of her apartment, where the only sound was the hum of the city below, a deep loneliness settled over her. It had been nearly a year since her breakup with Ethan, the man she had once thought she would marry. The wound of his betrayal still felt fresh. He'd been with her for years, personally and professionally, but in the end, their relationship collapsed under the weight of ambition, deceit, and secrets. Aveline had thrown herself into her work, trying to ignore the space he left behind. She hadn't planned on joining a dating app. It had been her younger sister's idea, insisting that Aveline needed to "get back out there." It wasn't that simple. After Ethan, trust didn't come quickly after everything that had happened. And yet, she was half-heartedly swiping through profiles while her wine glass sat half-empty beside her. Most of the men who popped up were predictable—men her age or older, with profiles complete with achievements meant to impress, but none stirred anything within her. Then, a notification flashed on her screen. Noah Thompson. 23. University student. Her eyes widened. She hadn't expected anyone that young to match with her. Curious, Aveline clicked on his profile, glancing over his photo. He had tousled dark hair and soft hazel eyes that held a certain depth, a quiet confidence. Unlike the other profiles she'd seen, his didn't boast of accomplishments or material things. Instead, his description was simple: "Studying history. Loves books, live music, and a good pub. Trying to figure out life, one day at a time." Aveline smiled, finding his honesty refreshing. There was no pretense, no effort to impress. He was just a young man with his life ahead of him, still figuring things out. She hesitated, her finger hovering over the screen. What could she possibly have in common with a 23-year-old? She was a woman who had fought tooth and nail to build her career to carve out a place in a male-dominated industry. And yet, something about his profile tugged at her. She could use a distraction. Something light, something fun. Nothing serious. After all, she wasn't ready for a real relationship, not after Ethan. Maybe a conversation with Noah would remind her what it felt like to be young again, to see the world through fresh eyes. With a sigh, Aveline swiped right. Noah nearly dropped his phone when the notification lit up his screen. It's a match! His heart raced as he stared at the words. Aveline Hayes had swiped right on him. The elegant, sophisticated CEO had matched with him. Part of him couldn't believe it. He wasn't sure what to expect, but his curiosity quickly overcame his nerves. Taking a deep breath, he opened their chat window and started typing. Noah: "So, are you a CEO by day and a secret superhero by night, or just the CEO thing?" He cringed slightly as he hit send, wondering if the joke was too much. But a few seconds later, a response popped up. Aveline: "Well, that depends. I could tell you, but then I'd have to ensure you never tell anyone else. :)" Noah laughed, relaxing as the tension eased. He quickly typed back. Noah: "Sounds like a fair trade. I'll keep your secret if you promise to teach me how to run a multi-million-pound company." Aveline: "Deal. But you'll have to start with coffee runs and late-night emails. Think you can handle it?" The banter flowed easily between them, and Noah found himself forgetting about the age gap, about the differences in their lives. Aveline was witty, sharp, and didn't take herself too seriously. As the conversation continued, it became clear they had more in common than he'd thought. They both loved to travel, shared a passion for art and history, and found solace in books—Noah with his university studies and Aveline as an escape from her high-pressure world. Hours passed in what felt like minutes, and Noah was surprised by how easy it was to talk to her. He had expected some barrier, some awkwardness because of their age difference, but instead, it felt like talking to someone he had known for years. For Aveline, the conversation was just as surprising. She had expected Noah to be flippant, self-centered, and careless, like other young men she had met. But he wasn't. He was thoughtful, engaging, and had a quiet charm that put her at ease. She found herself laughing at his jokes, sharing stories about her travels, and she felt lighter for the first time in a long while. Days passed, and their messages became more frequent and more personal. They talked about Noah's coursework, Aveline's latest business deal, and their favorite places in London. Noah told her about his love for history, how he wanted to travel the world and explore ancient cities, while Aveline confessed how, despite her successful career, she sometimes wondered if she had missed out on a different kind of life—a life filled with more spontaneity, more adventure. One evening, after a long day of lectures, Noah found himself sitting in his tiny kitchen, phone in hand, thinking about Aveline. There was something about her that captivated him. It wasn't just her beauty or her success. It was the way she spoke with such confidence, challenged him, and made him think. And despite the age difference, even though they came from two completely different worlds, Noah felt a connection he hadn't expected. He had been on dates before, but none had felt like this. This was different. Finally, after weeks of skirting around the topic, Noah decided to take a chance. Noah: "I know this might sound crazy, but would you like to meet sometime? No pressure, just coffee." His heart pounded as he stared at the screen, waiting for her response. He wasn't sure what he was expecting. Maybe she'd say no; perhaps she'd laugh it off. After all, what would a CEO like her want with someone like him? But then, her reply came in. Aveline: "I'd like that. How about this weekend?" Noah grinned, unable to believe his luck. Noah: "Perfect. I know a great little café near Regent's Park. Saturday at 2?" Aveline: "Sounds like a date." As Noah set his phone down, excitement coursed through him. He had no idea where this would lead or if it would even turn into anything. But for the first time in a long time, he felt like something exciting was on the horizon. Little did he know, this was only the beginning of a story that would change their lives in ways neither could have predicted.
