Nyssa was just a three-foot-long snake, nothing too dangerous or particularly threatening. In fact, most of her time was spent lazily enjoying the forest, humming to herself as she slithered through the undergrowth. "Laaa! Laaa! Lala!" Her version of singing wasn't much to write home about, but it made her happy, so that's what mattered. To most humans, she looked like an ordinary snake, the kind you'd see and think nothing of. But in reality, she was no ordinary serpent—she was a snake-in-training, destined to become a goddess.

It felt like only yesterday that the God had called her aside and, with an all-knowing voice, sent her down to the mortal realm with one job: become a goddess who would help the land flourish. It sounded noble, but to Nyssa, it was a snooze-fest. She had no intention of becoming that kind of goddess. Helping the land flourish? Boring. She had more fun humming around and occasionally finding bugs to chase.

Speaking of which, her sharp eyes caught sight of a particularly plump bug scuttling along the forest floor. Her body went still for a moment, eyes gleaming with hunger as she focused on her next meal. Nothing quite like a fresh bug to brighten the day.

Sure, God had mentioned something in passing about her once being human, but Nyssa had long since let go of those memories. Not that she minded. From what she could tell, being human seemed like a lot of work. They were always struggling, always fighting for something—honestly, she couldn't see the appeal. Why did it have to be her job? Weren't there more out there who would love to please the humans? It did annoy her to know that it had to be up to her.

Nyssa lowered herself closer to the ground, her body coiling with precision as she kept her eyes locked on the unsuspecting bug. It was a fat little thing, waddling clumsily across the mossy floor, completely oblivious to the predator in its midst. Nyssa's tongue flicked out, tasting the air. Yep, it was definitely her next snack.

She slithered slowly, inching closer until she was within striking distance. For a moment, she paused, savoring the thrill of the hunt. Then, with a swift snap, she lunged forward, jaws wide. The bug barely had time to register what was happening before it was caught between her sharp teeth.

Nyssa's jaw worked steadily, her tiny fangs piercing the shell with a satisfying crunch. Her eyes half-closed in delight as she chewed—well, more like gnawed—on her prize. The bug's earthy taste spread across her tongue, and she let out a little hum of satisfaction. This was the life. Who needed to be a goddess when you could snack on delicious forest creatures?

With a final gulp, the bug disappeared down her throat. Nyssa uncoiled herself, her body relaxing as she gave a satisfied sigh. She flicked her tongue again, licking the remnants from her lips, her stomach warm with contentment.

"Well, that hit the spot," she mused to herself, giving a little wiggle of joy. For a moment, she simply basked in the afterglow of a good meal, lying flat on the cool forest floor and gazing up at the trees.

In the back of her mind, she couldn't help but remember the task she was supposed to be focusing on Goddess training.

Nyssa lay there, her body stretched out lazily as she stared up at the bright sun filtering through the trees. The golden rays warmed her scales, and for a moment, everything was perfect. But the nagging thought of her goddess duties tugged at the back of her mind. It felt too soon, too overwhelming to be ready for such a grand responsibility. She just wanted more time to herself, more time to enjoy the simple pleasures of the forest—humming, sunbathing, and, of course, bug munching.

She sighed, closing her eyes for a moment, trying to push away the weight of that divine task looming over her. Just as she was starting to relax again, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed through the forest. Her body tensed, and without a second thought, she darted into a small hole beneath a nearby tree, her heart racing.
