The vase shattered against the wall, pieces scattering across the room like a violent punctuation to her fury. Teressa's pulse raced, her heart thundering in her chest. The air around her crackled as small, dark portals blinked in and out of existence.
"You're insufferable!" she spat, her voice raw with frustration.
Ben stood across the room, calm and collected, the familiar shadow of his tentacles writhing beneath his skin. His eyes glittered, cold and smug, and that smirk on his face-god, she wanted to wipe it off.
"And you're predictable," he replied coolly. "Throwing a tantrum whenever you don't get your way."
His voice dripped with condescension, and it made her blood boil. Her hand twitched, and a black void opened beside her, swirling with the unearthly energy of her power. She wanted to send him into it, banish him to one of the hellscapes she knew so well, but instead, she clenched her fist.
"Don't push me, Ben," she warned, her voice low and dangerous.
Ben's lips curled into a darker smile, his eyes narrowing. "Or what, Teressa? You going to throw me into one of your little dimensions again? I'm not afraid of you."
Without hesitation, Teressa thrust her hand forward, a portal opening right beneath Ben's feet. The floor disappeared, and for a moment, he stumbled, almost falling into the black abyss. But his tentacles shot out from his back, anchoring him to the wall before he could fall. They slithered and coiled, pulling him back up like some kind of dark, twisted lifeline.
"Nice try," he said with a laugh, swinging himself back onto solid ground.
The tentacles lashed out like serpents, aiming for her, but Teressa was faster. With a flick of her wrist, she opened a portal and disappeared into it, evading his grasp. His tendrils hit nothing but air.
Ben's eyes narrowed, scanning the room, searching for her. He knew she was playing with him, biding her time. But that only made him more determined to catch her.
The room fell silent, the tension thick and palpable. Then, without warning, a portal opened above him, and Teressa dropped down like a shadow, aiming to tackle him to the floor. But Ben was ready. His tentacles shot out again, wrapping around her waist and slamming her into the wall. She let out a gasp as the impact rattled her bones.
"I told you, you're predictable," he sneered, his breath hot against her ear.
Teressa's lips curled into a smile despite the pain. "Not yet, I'm not."
With a flick of her wrist, she opened another portal beneath both of them. The ground disappeared once more, and they were falling, spiraling into the black void of her pocket dimension.
Here, there was nothing. Just the two of them, suspended in an endless, swirling darkness.
Ben's tentacles thrashed wildly, trying to find something to hold onto, but there was nothing. He growled in frustration, his grip tightening on her. "Is this your plan? Trap me in here forever?"
Her voice was soft, almost playful, as it echoed through the dark. "Maybe."
Ben's eyes burned with anger, but there was something else there too. Something deeper. He tightened his hold on her, pulling her closer until their faces were inches apart. His tentacles wrapped around her wrists, binding her, but she didn't struggle.
"You think you can control me with this?" His voice was low, dangerous. The way his breath brushed her skin sent a shiver down her spine.
Her smile grew wider, even as his grip tightened. "Maybe I like you like this."
His eyes flashed, and before she could blink, his lips crashed against hers-rough, forceful, as if they were fighting even now. It wasn't a kiss of love or tenderness. It was fire and anger and heat. She kissed him back just as hard, her teeth biting into his lip.
"A kiss with a fist is better than none," she whispered against his lips, echoing the song playing faintly in the back of her mind.
Ben growled, breaking the kiss, and suddenly they were falling again. She could feel the energy in the air shift as her power reacted to the emotion of the moment. A portal opened beneath them, and they tumbled out, crashing back into her apartment with a thud.
They hit the floor hard, gasping for breath, their bodies entangled in the aftermath of the fall. Teressa rolled onto her back, her chest heaving, sweat trickling down her temple. Ben lay beside her, his tentacles slowly retreating into his body, his breathing labored.
The song still played faintly in the background, its pulsing rhythm matching the rapid beating of her heart. Teressa closed her eyes, letting the music wash over her as she caught her breath.
"You're impossible," she muttered, her voice thick with exhaustion.
Ben turned his head toward her, a dark grin spreading across his face. "And you love it."
She let out a breathless laugh, turning her head to meet his gaze. "You're lucky I do."
The silence between them stretched out, thick with the remnants of the fight. But even now, she could feel the heat between them, the push and pull that had always defined their relationship. It wasn't healthy. It wasn't right. But it was them. It was fire and fists, kisses that bruised, words that cut deep-and it was all they knew.
Ben propped himself up on his elbow, looking down at her with that same infuriating grin. "You're not done yet, are you?"
Teressa opened her eyes, staring up at him. "Do I look like I'm finished?"
Without warning, she reached up, grabbing the front of his shirt and pulling him down into another kiss. This one was just as fierce, but there was something else in it now-something more dangerous, more tender. It burned, but it also soothed. It was everything and nothing, and it made her want more.
Ben responded instantly, his hands gripping her waist, pulling her closer. The kiss deepened, their bodies pressed together as the music swelled around them. It was messy and rough, their emotions tangled in the rhythm of the song.
When they finally broke apart, both of them were breathless, their hearts pounding in time with the fading beat of the song. Teressa stared up at him, her lips swollen, her pulse still racing. Ben's gaze softened, just for a moment, before that familiar smirk returned.
"You really are something, Teressa."
She smirked back, her hand still clutching his shirt. "So are you."
The last notes of the song faded out, leaving the room in silence. But the energy between them lingered, thick and electric, as if the fight wasn't really over-just paused, waiting for the next spark.
Because with them, it always came back to fire.
