Zee Pruk was used to the quiet stillness of his nights. Living alone, far from the city’s lights, the only sound that accompanied him was the occasional rustling of leaves or the distant hoot of an owl. But tonight was different.

As Zee prepared to close up for the night, he noticed something on his porch—an orange and black cat, sitting perfectly still, staring right at him. The cat’s golden eyes glowed faintly in the moonlight, and for a moment, Zee felt an odd pull, as if the creature was silently asking for something.

Not one to shy away from curiosity, Zee opened the door and crouched down. "Hey there," he called softly, extending a hand. The cat didn’t move, just blinked, almost knowingly.

The strange thing was, Zee had never seen this cat before. The neighborhood didn’t have many strays, and this one looked too well-groomed to be a stray. Hesitating, Zee stood back up and turned to head inside. But just as he reached for the door, a quiet meow stopped him in his tracks.

He looked back down. The cat had moved closer, pawing at the hem of his jeans.

"Alright, alright. You can stay for the night," Zee said with a sigh, pushing the door open wider.

As the cat followed him inside, settling down at the foot of the couch, Zee couldn’t help but feel a strange connection to it. He watched the cat curl up, its eyes closing peacefully as though it had finally found some rest.

Little did Zee know, when the clock struck midnight, his guest was about to reveal its true nature.

Midnight

The clock struck twelve, and Zee was still awake, flipping through channels on the TV. But then, something shifted in the room—an almost imperceptible change in the air. He glanced down at where the cat had been and blinked in surprise.

The cat was gone.

In its place lay a boy. A boy no older than his early twenties, curled up in the same position, as if he had simply transformed from fur to flesh in a blink. His hair was a soft orange, streaked with black, just like the cat’s fur had been, and his skin seemed to glow faintly in the dim light.

Zee jumped to his feet, unsure of what to do. His mind raced, trying to make sense of what had just happened. "What the...?"

The boy stirred, groaning softly as he woke. He blinked up at Zee, his eyes the same golden hue as the cat's. "I... I can explain," the boy said, sitting up and rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.

Zee, still too stunned to speak, just stared.

"My name’s Nunew," the boy began, his voice gentle. "I’m under a curse. At night, I become... well, a cat."
