The morning sun streamed through the curtains of the dorm, casting warm rays over the scattered clothes and half-eaten snacks littering the living room floor.
The members of enhypen were still groggy, the previous night’s practice having worn them out. But one member was noticeably absent from the hustle and bustle. Ni-ki.
The youngest of the group was curled up in his bed, his forehead hot to the touch.
He had been feeling unwell for the past few days, and after a restless night, he had finally succumbed to his illness.
Sunoo, on the other hand, was still battling his own fatigue but was determined to prove he could push through.
He had a slightly sore throat and a nagging headache, but he was used to that kind of discomfort from late-night practices.
“Hyung, can you get me some water?” Ni-ki croaked from his bed, barely opening his eyes. Sunoo immediately jumped up to help.
“Of course, Ni-ki. Just rest,” he said softly, filling a cup with water. As he handed it to the younger boy, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was starting to feel worse himself. “You need to take it easy today.”
“I’ll be fine,” Ni-ki murmured, leaning back into his pillow. Sunoo watched as the younger boy's eyes fluttered shut, and a pang of worry twisted in his stomach.
As the day wore on, Sunoo tried to shake off the feeling of worry creeping in. He busied himself with chores and preparing breakfast for the rest of the members, but with every passing hour, his symptoms worsened.
A persistent nausea settled in, and he felt the world spinning slightly each time he moved too quickly.
When the other members started to wake up, they found Ni-ki still tucked in bed, while Sunoo attempted to act as if he were fine. Sunghoon was the first to notice the situation.
“Hey, is Ni-ki okay?” Sunghoon asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Sunoo, trying to sound cheerful, responded, “Yeah, just a bit sick. He’ll be fine.”
“He always gets sick. He just needs to toughen up,” Heeseung chuckled, earning a playful shove from Sunoo.
“Don’t say that! He’s really not well,” Sunoo insisted, his voice a little shaky.
“Relax, Sunoo. You’re always worried about someone else. You’re fine, right?” Jungwon said, pouring himself some cereal. Sunoo opened his mouth to reply but found that his voice failed him momentarily.
“Of course! I’m fine,” he managed, forcing a smile that felt more like a grimace.
The others brushed off Sunoo’s concern, joking about how Ni-ki was always the dramatic one.
Sunoo’s head spun as he sat down with his own breakfast, pushing the food around on his plate. Deep down, he wished he could just be honest about how he felt, but he was afraid of seeming weak.
As practice time approached, Sunoo contemplated skipping out to rest, but his determination won out. He wanted to show the others he could handle it.
When they arrived at the practice room, Ni-ki remained in bed, but the rest of enhypen was full of energy, stretching and warming up.
Sunoo stood at the back, watching as they began their routine, but his stomach churned. He leaned against the wall, trying to steady himself.
“Alright, let’s run through the choreography a few times!” Heeseung called out.
Sunoo forced himself to join in, but he could feel his body growing weaker with each move. His limbs felt heavy, and the bright lights of the studio seemed harsh against his sensitive eyes.
“Come on, Sunoo! Pick up the pace!” Jake shouted playfully, but Sunoo couldn’t muster the energy to keep up.
He shook his head, trying to clear the fog in his mind.
“Just one more time, you got this!” Jungwon encouraged, and Sunoo took a deep breath.
“Okay, okay,” he said, though it felt more like a whisper. He joined in again, but his movements were clumsy, and he stumbled slightly during a turn. The others didn’t notice, too caught up in their own practice.
As the minutes dragged on, Sunoo felt an overwhelming wave of nausea rise within him. He quickly stepped to the side, leaning against the wall to regain his balance.
He could hear the others laughing and shouting encouragement, but all he could focus on was the churning in his stomach.
“Sunoo, come on! You can do it! What's wrong with you?” Sunghoon called again.
Sunoo took a deep breath, forcing himself to rejoin the group. But as the routine continued, his nausea escalated.
He could feel the cold sweat on his brow, and panic started to creep in.
“I... I need to sit down,” he managed to say, but his voice was drowned out by the upbeat music and laughter.
“Just a bit longer!” Heeseung shouted back, unaware of Sunoo's struggle.
Suddenly, Sunoo’s stomach rebelled. The world around him blurred, and before he could comprehend what was happening, he rushed to the nearest bin in the practice room and doubled over.
The sound of retching filled the air, and the cheerful chatter ceased instantly.
Sunoo felt utterly embarrassed, his cheeks burning with shame as he heaved again. He could hear footsteps approaching, the sound growing louder until he felt a comforting hand on his back.
“Sunoo! Are you okay?” Jay’s voice broke through the haze.
“I... I think I’m sick,” Sunoo gasped, his voice shaky.
The members crowded around him, their expressions shifting from confusion to concern as the realization hit.
“Why didn’t you say something?” Sunghoon exclaimed, kneeling beside him, worry etched across his face.
“I thought you wouldn’t believe me,” Sunoo admitted, tears stinging his eyes.
“Of course we would have!” Jungwon said urgently, rubbing Sunoo’s back soothingly. “We thought you were just tired. We should’ve paid more attention.”
“I didn’t want to be a burden,” Sunoo whispered, feeling small under the weight of their concern.
Ni-ki’s voice suddenly broke through from the doorway, weak but worried. “Sunoo, what happened?” He shuffled into the room, his own illness clearly visible in his pallid complexion.
"What are you doing here? Aern't you suppose to be home?" Heeseung asked.
"I didn't want to stay home by myself so I came here." He continued, "anyway, what happened?"
“Sunoo’s sick too,” Sunghoon replied, still kneeling beside Sunoo, who leaned into his touch for support.
“I’m so sorry, Sunoo,” Ni-ki said, his eyes wide with guilt. “I should’ve known. I was so focused on myself…”
Sunoo shook his head, still feeling nauseous but comforted by the warmth of their concern. “It’s okay… I thought I could handle it.”
“Next time, just tell us,” Heeseung urged, placing a gentle hand on Sunoo’s shoulder.
The members huddled closer, offering their support as Sunoo took deep breaths to steady himself.
“Let’s take a break, alright?” Jungwon suggested, helping Sunoo to his feet. “We’ll take care of you two today.”
