( chapter eleven, unspoken promises )
❝ slow down you crazy child, you're so ambitious for a juvenile but then if you're so smart, tell me why are you still so afraid? ❞october 11th, 1996
THE TIP OF KATHRYN'S shoe tapped anxiously against the floor as she waited outside Principal Himbry's office. Her mind raced, not with fear of expulsion - she knew her father wouldn't care - but with thoughts of what the Montgomery family might do once they found out she'd essentially jumped their daughter. The Montgomerys were one of the richest families in Woodsboro, and crossing them could bring her a lot of trouble.
But that wasn't the only thing weighing on her. She itched to get back to her friends, particularly one very angry boy - Billy.
Considering his recent arrest for possible attempted murder, Billy's little outburst of violence in the hallway wasn't helping his case. Kathryn had never seen him this furious, at least not in a long time. The last time she remembered him being anywhere close was when his father forced him to keep playing football despite a sprained knee, just before playoffs. The boy was in pain, angry, and emotionally and physically drained. She didn't know Hank Loomis well, but from what she'd heard, he wasn't a good man. He practically lived through his son.
With a groan, a sudden realization hit Kathryn. Billy's in deep shit when he gets home...
The door to Principal Himbry's office swung open and out walked James and Ted - Catherine's hired goons from earlier. Kathryn's glare followed them as they scurried out, flushed, avoiding her gaze.
Yeah, that's what I thought.
"Come on in, Kathryn," Principal Himbry called, his face unreadable. She didn't speak, just offered a smile to the receptionist before stepping inside and closing the door.
Himbry gestured to the chair in front of his desk. "Take a seat. This won't take long."
For a moment, they sat in silence. Himbry just stared at her, which made her uncomfortable. The abnormally large pair of sharp scissors sitting inches away on his desk did nothing to calm her nerves. Eventually, she broke the silence.
"So, what's the verdict? Expulsion? Suspension? Lunch detention with the weird kids by the trash cans?"
Himbry rolled his eyes. "No, none of those things. Look, I'm not going to expel you for something that wasn't entirely your fault. Miss Montgomery-"
"-is a bitch."
He narrowed his eyes but couldn't suppress a small chuckle. "Let's not talk about our fellow students like that, Kathryn."
"Hey, I call them as I see them," she shrugged, unbothered.
Himbry chuckled again. "You've been through a lot - not just recently, but in general. I know you're a good kid, so I'm giving you another shot."
Kathryn offered him a genuine smile. "Thanks, Arthur."
Arthur grimaced, raising a hand. "Don't get too comfortable. We're not friends," he sobered, leaning forward. "I just need to ask you one thing."
"Of course."
There was a pause as the principal glanced down at his desk before looking her in the eye. "Is everything okay at home? Honestly."
Kathryn stiffened. The question caught her completely off guard. She stumbled over her words before finally answering. "Y-Yeah, everything's fine - good. Why do you ask?"
