"Antkit! Come and play!" Heatherkit called. She was already with his brother, Leafkit, and Nightcloud's son, Breezekit. "Okay," Antkit was about to dash to their side when his mother, Willowclaw, stopped him. "No, Antkit. The sun is setting, and you'll all have to sleep soon."
Leafkit scurried over to Antkit's side, his dark ginger pelt messy. "Come on, Willowclaw!" he whined, pawing at her gray fur. "I'll look after them," Heatherkit added, gazing up at Willowclaw with pleading sky-blue eyes. Whenever she did that, all the queens would soften-including Willowclaw. The gray queen sighed and finally nodded. "Okay. But don't stray far!"
"Let's play moss-ball!" Leafkit suggested eagerly. All the other kits agreed, and Breezekit hurriedly mewed, "I'll go with Heatherkit." Leafkit immediately looked crestfallen and complained, "Why must I go with Antkit again?"
Feeling a pang of hurt, Antkit pressed his brown pelt against his brother's dark ginger one and insisted, "I'll beat you two this round!" However, none of the other kits looked impressed, and Heatherkit even whispered to Leafkit's ear, "I feel sorry for you, having a brother like him."
Angry now, Antkit grabbed the ball of moss and carried it to them- and tripped over it clumsily. This time, no cat bothered to hide their laughter. "What a fool!" Breezekit guffawed, doubling over with laughter. Leafkit was snorting loudly, and Heatherkit looked at Antkit with amusement in her eyes. "It's not funny!" Antkit snapped, then ran away from them, his pelt stinging with embarrassment.
"Whoa, Antkit. Slow down!" In his haste, Antkit had bumped into the fluffy pelt of his father, Flytail. Seeing the look on his son's face, the snowy-white tom curled his tail over Antkit's shoulders. "What's wrong?" he asked, concerned.
Unable to keep the feelings in, Antkit blurted out what had happened. "They always do this! Why am I so clumsy... I will never be a capable warrior now!" he wailed. Flytail rasped his tongue on his black ear. "It's okay, Antkit. It's normal to be clumsy as a kit. You know, I was too!"
Fury shook Antkit as he glared at Flytail. "Then I inherited that from you! And I never wanted to be like this, a mouse-brain to other kits, the odd one out. I don't want you to be my father!"
And with that, Antkit stalked away, back to the nursery, unaware of the hurt and anguished look in Flytail's amber eyes.
