( chapter twelve, everyone's a suspect )
❝ and down the road, you will love me until you resent me ❞october 11th, 1996
RANDY MADE HIS way down the movie aisle, glancing back at Kathryn, who was stationed at the front desk. A bright smile lit her face as she spoke with customers, her voice upbeat and cheerful despite everything that had happened today.
His gaze lingered on her while he absentmindedly fiddled with the videos in his hands, completely unaware of the figure approaching him.
"Jesus, this place is packed," Stu's voice broke the silence as he appeared in front of Randy, knocking the videos out of his hands with a grin.
Randy bent down with an annoyed expression, gathering the fallen tapes. "Yeah, we had a run in the 'mass murder' section."
Stu smirked, leaning casually against the shelf. "You comin' to my fiesta tonight?"
Randy shot him a glance, shrugging. "Yeah, I'm off early - curfew, you know?"
Stu's attention drifted over to Kathryn, who had just noticed his arrival. She waved at him, and Stu gave her a playful wink in return.
Randy frowned, suddenly catching sight of Billy, who stood a few feet away, deep in conversation with some girls from school, seemingly oblivious to the attention.
"Now that's poor taste," Randy muttered.
Stu's brow furrowed as he turned to look. "What?"
Randy gestured over to Billy. "If you were the only suspect in a senseless bloodbath, would you be standing in the horror section?"
Stu rolled his eyes. "Well, it was all a misunderstanding. He didn't do anything."
Randy scoffed. "You're such a lapdog. He's got 'killer' printed all over his forehead!"
Stu's tone turned mockingly dramatic. "Oh really? Then why'd the cops let him go, smart guy?"
"Because they obviously don't watch enough movies. This is standard horror movie stuff, Prom Night revisited, man."
"Why would he want to kill his own girlfriend?" Stu asked, his voice more serious now.
"Ex-girlfriend," Kathryn interrupted in a bored tone as she stepped in between the two. "I need the keys to the back inventory."
Randy rolled his eyes, irritated by the interruption. "Why?"
"Because, fuck-face, I just do. Boss-hole isn't here, and you're the only one with a spare set." She glanced at Stu, who watched their bickering with an amused grin. It reminded him of Billy and his relationship; Kathryn would be Billy, and Randy would be him - as much as it pains him to admit it.
"Whatever." Randy sighed, fishing out the keys and handing them over.
Kathryn snatched them from his hand and, without looking back, flipped Randy off as she walked away.
"Man, she's so annoyingly sexy..." Randy turned back to Stu, missing the slight glare in his eyes at his words. "Anyway, there's always some stupid bullshit reason to kill your girlfriend or ex-girlfriend. That's the beauty of it all. Simplicity."
Stu paused, raising an eyebrow. "So what's his reason?"
Randy hesitated, his cheeks flushing slightly. "Maybe Sidney wouldn't sleep with him..."
