freedom ≠ comfort

now i’m setting you free
like a long time caged bird.
spread your wings and let them
kiss the strange clouds.
feel the foreign feeling of freedom,
the thing that you have been longing for.

now i am letting you fly
towards the moonlight, high in the sky.
reach whatever you want to reach,
go wherever you want to go.
land your feet on the grounds
that you have never touched.
run your fingertips on leaves
and feel the life in their tiny bodies.
maybe in that way you’ll finally realize
that there is more to love in this world
than fear.

now that freedom’s in your hands,
think carefully of what to do with it.
i hope you won’t throw it away again
for people who promise comfort,
because comfort is not always about
being free,
and freedom is not always about
being comfortable,
and people are people;
one day, you will find yourself crying
after hearing the most gut wrenching things
coming out from their mouths.
and they will apologize,
but do it again—
it’ll be too late for you to learn
that you are caged once more.

now everything’s up to you,
whether you keep your freedom
or trade it for something useful.
now i am giving you the key,
now i am setting you free.

chase butterflies on your way,
jca.
