Time passed while Emily and Takemichi frequently crossed paths in the mornings. She would be on her way to university, her white cotton bag slung over one shoulder, while Takemichi headed to work in his casual attire. Their conversations, though brief, had become a comforting ritual.
One crisp morning, as they met outside of their apartments, Emily inquired, "Hey Takemichi, have you heard from Hina yet?"
Takemichi shook his head, a hint of frustration in his eyes. "No, not yet. No luck so far."
Emily offered a reassuring smile. "She's probably still enjoying her trip or maybe she's just too shy to call right now. I'm sure she'll get in touch soon."
Takemichi nodded, appreciating her optimism. "Yeah, you're probably right. Thanks, Emily."

The day was bright as Emily attended Professor Matsuno's seminar, where students introduced themselves and their research interests.
A tall, confident student named Kenji stood up first. "Hello everyone, I'm Kenji. For my research, I'm investigating the influence of media portrayal on public perception of criminal justice policies. Specifically, I'm examining how sensationalized crime reporting shapes policy decisions and public support for punitive measures. My goal is to understand the feedback loop between media narratives and legislative action in the criminal justice system."
Next, a petite, quiet student named Yumi spoke up. "Hi, I'm Yumi. My research will explore the impact of cybercrime on individual privacy and the challenges in tracing digital footprints. I aim to understand how new technologies are exploited for criminal activities."
When it was Emily's turn, she stood up with a mix of excitement and apprehension. "Hi, I'm Emily. My research will focus on the Tokyo Manjikai gang. I want to understand how individuals become involved in such extreme criminal activities and what drives them to commit heinous acts."
A murmur of shock rippled through the room at her bold choice of topic. Professor Matsuno, initially taken aback, quickly masked his surprise with an admiring smile. "That's certainly an ambitious project, Emily. I look forward to seeing how you approach it."

Later that day, Emily stood outside Professor Matsuno's office, papers clutched tightly in her hand. She knocked on the door, and after receiving a prompt, she entered. The Professor gestured for her to sit and asked, "What can I do for you?"
"Professor Matsuno, I've been working on the outline of my master thesis and would like to discuss it with you," she began, her voice steady despite her nerves.
Emily placed her research on the desk, detailing her objectives and the initial findings she had compiled. "I want to focus on profiling the Tokyo Manjikai gang. I'd like you to supervise my thesis."
