She followed her through to the kitchen, feeling her jaw drop once more. It had a huge island counter in the centre and stainless steel appliances.
"Woah, this is huge!" Arabella said. "Probably a complete dream for Claudia."
"Exactly," she grinned, walking over to the sink. "Me and Finneas are definitely not chefs. The first things we tried to make were a massive fail, so that's why there are so many dishes."
Arabella looked over to see tall piles of pots and pans, balanced precariously beside the sink. "What did you end up even making?" She looked up in curiosity.
"I'm not completely useless," she smiled. "We were just trying to go out of our comfort zone and try something new. I ended up just making us both some noodles."
"Well, what do I need to do?" Arabella asked.
"Hmm..." Billie grabbed a knife and gave it to Arabella. "Okay, you can scrape the food off from these plates-"
Arabella sat up on the counter, her feet dangling over the edge, and grabbed the pile of plates. Whatever Billie and Finneas' failed dish was, it stank. She scraped the food over the edge into the trash, watching Billie set a pot on the stove.
"This is gonna be some vegan hot cocoa, which is always so good when it's cold."
"I could definitely use it. I'm not used to snow."
She watched Billie soak some of the dishes. 'Does touching food gross you out?'
"Like touching wet food? I guess not."
"You could have definitely said that nicer but okay, I'll start soaking these plates, and you can start scrubbing."
She passed over the plates and hopped down as Billie turned on the water and pushed up her sleeves. Her eyes drifted from her forearms to the tattoo on her hand as another buried memory resurfaced.
She remembered hanging out at Claudia's, on the couch watching some trashy movie. Arabella remembered laughing with her at the terrible plot until Claudia had eventually fallen asleep, the TV still blaring on in the background.
Then, she remembered hearing some music. Arabella was in the delirious state that comes when you are just about to fall asleep, and could not tell where it was coming from. The soft sound of the piano and humming soon lulled her to sleep, the melody ingrained, until at last she knew it came from Billie, with the release of 'i love you'.
Billie finished soaking the plates, having submerged them fully in water as Arabella blinked, forcing her thoughts back to the present as she quickly went to help.
They made small talk as Billie showed her where the dish soap and sponges were. It didn't even feel that gross, just cold mostly. She found Billie easy to talk to, with there being just enough familiarity there that she didn't feel like a complete stranger.
Billie made her laugh a lot, which she wasn't expecting. She seemed not to expect it either- her eyebrows raising when she giggled.
Arabella had her hands deep in the foamy suds of the sink when her phone on the counter vibrated. She craned her neck, gasping when she saw Matthew's name.
"Oh my God, oh my God! It's Matthew!"
"Is that your boyfriend?" Billie asked from where she was scraping food into the trash on the other side of the counter.
"No, my scene partner. This could be about the audition. I need to wash my hands-" she went to turn the sink on with her elbow when she saw Billie grab her phone off the counter. "What are you doing?"
