Chapter 65: The Hunter and the Prey

If it weren't for the shape and skin color being the same as a domestic pig, he would have thought it was a wild boar.

Later, he saw wild boars among the prey, and with the comparison, he confirmed that it was a mutated domestic pig.

He also saw someone provoke a herd of black pigs, and they ran desperately down the mountain. Those who were slow were either bitten or trampled to death by the black pigs.

Although the soldiers eventually shot the black pigs, many people still died.

This is why hunting is considered highly dangerous.

"Is it too late to go back now?" The man asked, his face pale with fear.

He had come with the intention of finding some bird nests and maybe catching a few pheasants or, if lucky, a snow hare.

Hearing this, he was so scared he couldn't move.

"It's too late to go back now!" Wu Liangcai teased.

The man became even more frightened, almost on the verge of tears.

Mei Zhifeng, feeling a bit sympathetic, said, "You don't need to rush back. You can stay at the gathering point. If the soldiers need help, they'll give you points."

"Thank you for telling me this," the man said, relieved and grateful to Mei Zhifeng.

Wu Liangcai rolled his eyes at Mei Zhifeng and walked away, muttering about being too kind-hearted when they could barely feed themselves.

By now, everyone had gotten off the bus, and the man with the loudspeaker began speaking again.

"Everyone, listen up. We've reached our destination. You can move freely, but the mountain is dangerous. It's recommended to form teams to find prey and return here before dark to go back to the base."

"One more thing, the base only provides transportation. Your safety is your responsibility.

Understood?"

"Understood," the crowd responded weakly.

The man didn't care about the volume of the response. He had said what he needed to say.

People naturally grouped with those they knew and quickly headed up the mountain.

Xie Hongquan, Wu Liangcai, Xie Wen, Mei Zhifeng, and Zhang Shan and his son formed a group of six.

"Boss, are you coming with us?" Wu Liangcai asked.

She had other matters to attend to and wouldn't go with them.

"I felt a bit unwell on the bus. I'll rest here for a while. If I'm still here when you return, I'll join you," Su Su said.

"Okay, make sure to rest well," Wu Liangcai said, concerned.

"Mm," Su Su nodded calmly.

Wu Liangcai and the others headed up the mountain, waving to Su Su before disappearing into the forest.

Su Su glanced in the direction of Zhang Qianrong and Li Jingyi and then walked towards the nearest forest to the west.

Zhang Qianrong and Li Jingyi had been watching Su Su from a distance.

Seeing her chatting and laughing with the men, they worried she would team up with them. But soon, the men left her and went up the mountain.

They must have thought Su Su, being a woman, was weak and left her behind.

The two were secretly pleased, thinking this was their chance.

Little did they know, a skilled hunter often appears as prey.

They saw Su Su as prey, not realizing they were the prey in her eyes.

Seeing Su Su head into the forest alone, they followed her without hesitation.

Su Su slowed her pace to ensure they could follow.

Her footprints varied in depth as she walked through the snow.

Zhang Qianrong and Li Jingyi followed the footprints into the forest, where they suddenly disappeared.

"Look, the footprints end here," Li Jingyi said anxiously.

Zhang Qianrong glanced at the footprints and thought. They ended between two trees. With snow everywhere, anyone walking would leave footprints.

The only way for footprints to disappear was... up the tree!

He looked up but didn't see Su Su.

"Damn it! She got away!"

He had to admit they had missed a great opportunity.

Who knew when they would get another chance?

"How could she get away!!" Zhang Qianrong was furious.

Li Jingyi lost control, seeing their hopes of getting a house and points vanish.

"Find her! We can't let her get away," Li Jingyi said, grabbing Zhang Qianrong's arm, almost hysterical.

"If we find her, I won't have to go back to that dump. Hurry!"

Zhang Qianrong, in pain from her grip, shook her off impatiently, "She's gone. Where do you want me to find her?

"Are you looking for me?"

A familiar oice came from behind.

Zhang Qianrong and Li Jingyi froze, then turned around in surprise.

Su Su was leaning against a tree, staring at them with piercing eyes.

"Su Su, you were hard to find!" Li Jingyi said through gritted teeth.

"I didn't ask you to find me," Su Su replied coldly.

Only Zhang Qianrong noticed something off in Su Su's gaze.

Her eyes were colder than the freezing air, sending a chill down his spine.

He cautiously asked, "Su Su, how did you get behind us without leaving footprints?"

Before Su Su could answer, Li Jingyi interrupted impatiently.

"Why are you talking to her?"

She glared at Zhang Qianrong and then arrogantly said to Su Su, "You have two choices: hand over your house and points, or we'll take them from you."

Su Su sneered, her eyes flashing with killing intent.

"Come and take them if you can!

"Don't blame us for being ruthless!"

With that, Li Jingyi charged at Su Su.

Zhang Qianrong tried to stop her but was too slow.

Before Li Jingyi could reach her, Su Su pulled out something resembling a handgun.

A shadow flashed from it, and Li Jingyi screamed in pain.
