Growing up involves a multitude of changes; from new environments, to new beliefs, new senses, and even new emotions. Over the course of one Riley Andersen's life, she had been introduced to new thought trains, new desires, new hopes, and new beliefs, whether they be good or bad. Over the summer of her 8th Grade year, past her 13th birthday, she had been introduced to a certain awkward time in an adolescent's development; puberty.

With it came new moods, new attitudes, new insecurities, and new anxieties as well as an onslaught of new emotions. Among such emotions were Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui, otherwise known as "Boredom." Because of her new insecurities and strange new emotions, she snubbed her best friends in favor of the popular kids; high schoolers she met at a hockey camp for some of the best players in San Francisco and the surrounding area. Though she's patched things up between her and her friends, she still carries the guilt with her, blaming herself for what followed.

When the school year started, she was met with the anxieties and pressure of high school life. She was easily influenced and desired to fit in still yet, but she had a mentor in Val Ortiz, one of the most well-known players in high school hockey in California. No matter what rumors may surface about her, Val was actually a good influence on Riley, even becoming like a big sister to her.

Meanwhile, inside her head, Headquarters had adjusted to Anxiety and the rest of the new emotions. Though, they're still at odds with each other at times and argue over what they believe is best for Riley, for the most part, they were able to work together. Joy had gotten Riley back and had discovered a way to calm Anxiety down to avoid a repeat situation.

However, they have overlooked one thing; a new study that the workers have installed during Riley's "mental breakdown" the year prior. A study which has a desk in the center of it with a name tag that reads, "Affection, the Love emotion..."
