A few weeks later, Yves found herself studying late at the library, as usual. The quiet atmosphere was her escape, her way of staying on top of her schoolwork. Aiah had gone home early, leaving Yves alone to finish an essay due the next morning. It was nearing midnight when she decided to call it a night.

The streets were eerily quiet as she made her way home, the streetlights flickering occasionally as the wind blew gently through the trees. Yves always walked this route, never feeling unsafe in their small town, but tonight was different. A strange tension hung in the air, and she could feel it.

As she rounded a corner, she froze. A few meters away, in the shadows of an alley, she saw them—Cole and his gang. They weren’t alone. Surrounding them were a group of men, and it was clear that a confrontation was about to explode. Yves’ heart raced as she ducked behind a parked car, trying to stay hidden. She knew she should leave, but something kept her rooted to the spot.

“You made a mistake coming here,” Cole’s voice cut through the tension, low and threatening.

The men standing against him sneered, but Yves could feel the fear in their movements. Cole’s reputation wasn’t something to take lightly. One wrong move, and everything could spiral out of control.

Before she could make her escape, a loud noise echoed through the night—a gunshot.

Yves gasped, and in that moment, her presence was revealed. Cole’s sharp gaze immediately flickered to where she was hiding, his eyes narrowing. His gang members turned to look as well, and panic surged through Yves’ body. She wasn’t supposed to be here. She wasn’t supposed to witness any of this.

In the blink of an eye, one of Cole’s men grabbed her, pulling her out of the shadows. Yves struggled, her heart pounding in her chest, but it was no use. She was trapped.

“What do we do with her, boss?” the guy holding her asked, tightening his grip on her arm.

Cole took a step closer, his expression unreadable as he stared down at Yves. His dark eyes scanned her face, and for a moment, something flickered behind them—something dangerous, but also curious.

“Let her go,” Cole said, his voice calm but commanding.

The guy hesitated, but eventually released Yves, shoving her toward Cole. She stumbled but quickly regained her footing, her eyes wide with fear and confusion.

“Go home,” Cole said quietly, his gaze still locked on hers. “And forget what you saw tonight.”

Yves didn’t need to be told twice. She turned and ran as fast as she could, her breath coming in ragged gasps. But no matter how fast she ran, she couldn’t outrun the feeling that her life had just taken a sharp, dangerous turn.
