Detective Arjun Roy had always thrived on puzzles, but the one that landed on his desk this foggy October morning was unlike any he'd seen. The case was as peculiar as the anonymous note that came with it: "Solve this, or more will die." It was terse, cryptic, and arrived on his desk without any trace of who had left it.
The victim, Karan Malhotra, a prominent businessman, was found dead in his lavish study, a single gunshot wound to the head. The room was locked from the inside, no sign of forced entry, and the gun was resting in his lifeless hand. The police had quickly deemed it a suicide.
But something felt off to Arjun.
As he paced around the study, a detail caught his eye: the faint outline of a smudge on the floor near the window, just outside of the camera's view. Arjun knelt down, running his hand over it. It looked like something heavy had been dragged across the wooden surface. He checked the security footage again, fast-forwarding and rewinding. Just before the time of death, the cameras glitched. Coincidence? Arjun thought not.
The first twist came when he dug deeper into Karan's life. The businessman had made many enemies, but none more dangerous than his own brother, Aditya. Years ago, a bitter feud had split the family, and rumors swirled about Aditya's involvement in illegal dealings. Arjun tracked Aditya down, but when questioned, Aditya seemed calm, composed, and oddly uninvolved. He admitted to disliking his brother but claimed to have been out of town during the murder.
Then, a second body was found—Leena, Karan's secretary. She had died in an apparent car accident the same night as Karan's murder. Arjun's gut told him these two deaths were connected, but there was no hard evidence yet. As he began to unravel Leena's personal life, he discovered she was involved in an affair with none other than Aditya. Things were becoming tangled.
Arjun decided to pay Aditya another visit, but when he arrived at the latter's luxurious apartment, he found Aditya dead in his living room, shot in the exact same manner as Karan. Once again, the scene was staged like a suicide.
Arjun's mind raced. Two brothers, both dead, both seemingly committing suicide—but both were clearly murdered. The common thread was Leena, but she was gone too. Or was she?
He went back to the security footage from Karan's study, focusing on the glitch. A brief flicker revealed a shadowy figure, blurred but present in the moments before Karan's death. Whoever this person was had tampered with the footage. But the glitch wasn't random—it was deliberate, hiding just enough to throw suspicion off the killer.
After days of sleepless investigation, Arjun finally stumbled upon the key: a hidden financial account under Leena's name, funded by Karan. The transactions linked back to a private investigator, hired months earlier. With this new information, Arjun dug deeper into Karan's past and discovered a secret that flipped the case on its head.
Karan and Aditya weren't the only heirs to the Malhotra empire. A third sibling, long thought dead, had been erased from the family records after a scandalous affair. This sibling was none other than Leena herself, using her position as Karan's secretary to infiltrate her brothers' lives and take revenge for being cast out. The staged suicides were her way of punishing them, framing them for their own deaths, while her car accident had been faked to throw off suspicion.
Arjun tracked Leena to a remote farmhouse, where she was preparing to flee the country. Confronting her in the dead of night, Arjun pieced it all together: the inheritance, the bitter jealousy, and the intricate web of lies that Leena had spun over the years.
But just as he was about to arrest her, Leena laughed, pulling a gun from her coat. "Do you really think I'd let it end like this?" she said, her eyes gleaming with madness.
In that moment, a shot rang out, but not from Leena's gun. Arjun stood frozen as Leena collapsed to the ground, a bullet in her chest. From the shadows, an elderly figure emerged—their estranged father, whom everyone had assumed had died years ago.
"I couldn't let her take everything," the old man whispered before collapsing beside her, succumbing to the guilt and the years of family secrets.
Arjun was left standing in the middle of the farmhouse, surrounded by the corpses of a family consumed by betrayal, lies, and revenge.
As the first light of dawn broke through the windows, he realized that some cases never truly have a victor—just survivors.
