THIS ONE MADE ME GIGGLE

The end of the school day at Abbott Elementary always brought a sense of relief. The hallways quieted down, the clamor of students fading into the background as teachers wrapped up their tasks. Barbara Howard, as always, remained behind, carefully organizing her classroom before she headed home. Every desk had to be in place, every paper stacked just so. Her meticulousness was something she prided herself on—order in all things.

A knock on the doorframe interrupted her thoughts.

“Hey, Barb,” came the familiar voice of Melissa Schemmenti, gruff but warm. “You ready to call it a day?”

Barbara looked up from her desk, surprised to see Melissa lingering in the doorway. “I thought you’d have rushed out by now,” Barbara replied with a raised brow. “Don’t you have a poker game to get to tonight?”

Melissa shrugged, walking into the room without waiting for an invitation. “I can be a little late. Besides, something tells me you could use a drink more than I could right now.”

Barbara gave a soft chuckle, shaking her head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m fine.”

Melissa pulled out one of the student chairs, turning it backward before sitting on it. “Uh-huh. Sure, you are. That’s why you’ve been frowning at that same stack of papers for the last five minutes.”

Barbara hadn’t even realized she’d been staring at the same sheet. She sighed, finally admitting, “It’s been a long week, that’s all.”

Melissa gave her a look—one that said she wasn’t buying it. “You’ve been quiet, Barb. Quieter than usual. It’s not just the week, is it?”

Barbara hesitated, unsure of how to put into words what had been on her mind for days now. She and Melissa had always had an easy friendship, one built on their mutual respect as seasoned educators and their shared ability to keep Abbott Elementary running, despite all the chaos. But something had shifted recently. It had started with the little things—like how Barbara found herself looking forward to seeing Melissa in the morning, or how Melissa’s casual touches lingered a bit longer than before.

And then there were the dreams. Dreams where she and Melissa weren’t just colleagues, weren’t just friends, but something more. Dreams that left Barbara unsettled when she woke, unsure of where these feelings had come from or what to do about them.

“I’ve been thinking,” Barbara said slowly, setting her pen down, “about... change.”

Melissa’s brow furrowed. “Change? Like, what? Retirement? You can’t be thinking about leaving me here to deal with these clowns on my own.”

Barbara chuckled at that, appreciating Melissa’s humor, but her heart still raced. She wasn’t talking about retirement. She wasn’t sure she could even say what was truly on her mind.

“No,” Barbara said, her voice softer now. “Not that kind of change. It’s more... personal.”

Melissa’s expression softened, the teasing edge dropping from her voice. “What’s going on, Barb?”

Barbara stared at her hands, fidgeting in a way she wasn’t used to. She had always been so sure of herself, so in control. But this was different. This was uncharted territory.

“It’s just,” Barbara began, pausing to collect herself, “I’ve been thinking about relationships. About... feelings that I didn’t expect to have.”

Melissa’s eyes didn’t leave hers, but Barbara could see a flicker of something—curiosity, perhaps, or maybe something deeper. “What kind of feelings?”

Barbara hesitated for only a moment longer before taking a deep breath and saying the words that had been sitting at the edge of her mind for weeks now. “Feelings about you.”

For a moment, time seemed to stop. The silence in the room grew thick, and Barbara’s heart pounded in her chest. She hadn’t meant to say it outright, but once the words were out, there was no taking them back.

Melissa didn’t say anything right away. Instead, she sat there, studying Barbara with that same intense gaze she always had. But this time, there was no teasing grin, no light banter. This time, there was something else—something serious, something real.

“I wasn’t expecting that,” Melissa said finally, her voice quieter than Barbara had ever heard it.

Barbara felt a flush of embarrassment creep up her neck. “I know. I didn’t expect it either.”

Melissa leaned forward, resting her arms on the back of the chair as she looked at Barbara, her expression unreadable. “You’ve been driving yourself nuts over this, haven’t you?”

Barbara let out a small, self-deprecating laugh. “You could say that.”

Melissa’s lips quirked into a half-smile. “You know, Barb, you’re not the only one who’s been feeling things.”

Barbara’s eyes widened. “I’m not?”

Melissa shook her head. “I’ve been thinking about you, too. More than I probably should.”

Barbara sat back in her chair, stunned by the admission. It was one thing to acknowledge her own feelings, but hearing Melissa admit the same... it made everything feel real, more real than Barbara had been prepared for.

“So what do we do about this?” Barbara asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Melissa shrugged, but there was a softness in her eyes. “We don’t have to figure it all out right now. But we could start by grabbing a drink. Talk it over. See where it goes.”

Barbara hesitated. She was a woman of routine, a woman who lived by a strict set of rules. But there was something about Melissa, something about the idea of stepping out of her comfort zone, that felt right.

“Okay,” Barbara said after a moment. “I think I’d like that.”

Melissa’s smile widened, and she stood, offering her hand to Barbara. “Come on. I know a place. And don’t worry—I’ll take it slow. No rush.”

Barbara took her hand, feeling a warmth spread through her as their fingers intertwined. She didn’t know what the future held, didn’t know where this path would lead. But for the first time in a long time, she was ready to step into the unknown.

Together.
