This was actually one of my Language Arts assignments but I wanted to share it, so tell me what you think. Just to let you know, I'm not that experienced with writing so cut me some slack!

Phil awoke early on a Saturday morning and got ready for the day. He looked out through his dirty window. It was barely light at all in his room- only a little sun shown through the cracks in the mud on the window.

Everyone was very poor. No one had any clean water to clean things, no more electricity, not even air! It was January 2101. The earth had gotten unbearably hot and very dirty with garbage. People had to wear special suits with masks to help them breathe and go outside. The suits had very cool devices that would process water for drink and showers (they would have to shower inside their suits) and would process enough food for them to live everyday. The scientists had made these for everyone to wear for their safety.

Phil already had his suit on for he had to wear it to bed too! He went outside and looked up in the sky. Dirty, brown clouds were above barely blocking the sun’s scorching hot rays. Phil went next door to his best friend, Miranda’s house. They’ve been friends since kindergarten and they would now be in 7th grade but since no one had any money, they had to shut down schools and any community places for good. That meant no learning at all!

He knocked on her door and she answered.

“Hey Phil!” She walked out, “Did you finish writing your speech?”

“Yeah, right here,” Phil, said while handing Miranda a dirty piece of lined paper with writing scribbled all over it.

“Wow, I can barely read it, but you’ll be reading it so it shouldn’t be too complicated.””

“Do you think anyone will come listen to our speech?” Phil and Miranda had put up small signs all around Honolulu, where they lived. They were going to give a speech about helping bring the world back to the way it was 90 years ago.

“Let’s hope! Sometimes I feel that we are the only people on earth who has hope for changing the earth back to the way it was,” said Miranda.

They arrived at the local park a few minutes later. They were surprised by the amount of people who had actually come! At least 25-30 people showed up! Phil suddenly felt nervous. He was going to be standing up in front of a lot of people, but Miranda was there for him. The thought of that calmed him down a little. Miranda nudged him in the side. He went onto the steps to speak in front of the crowd.

“Hi… uh, thanks for coming. Miranda and me are both very grateful that you guys came to listen to our speech. Uh, I’ve done research and I’ve seen pictures of the earth 90 years ago. There’s bright, green grass and great big, blue oceans. Tall, bushy trees to keep us cool in the hot summer sun, but look at the earth now. It’s brown and dirty! It’s full of garbage and what are we doing about it? Nothing! We think we should try… try to make the earth a better place again. The human population is not going to last for very long now because we aren’t doing anything!”

“But how would we do that?” asked a tall, skinny man in the middle of the crowd, “I can see how we can maybe help with the garbage, but how would we clean everything? To get tall, bushy trees again? We don’t have any water except the kind we use for drinking and taking showers! The scientists’ devices are able to generate clean water, but they only what us to use it for our selves.”

After all the thoughts of saving the earth, he realized they hadn’t really talked about how they would get more clean water.  After all this work and motivation their hopes and dreams get stopped. “Maybe we can convince the scientists to create more of their devices so more water can be processed at the same time!”

“We all know that the scientists don’t want to hear that kind of stuff!” said another man in the crowd, “I don’t think scientists want kids running into their lab and requesting them to do more work!” Several people in the crowd agreed with this opinion- some even left.

“It’s always worth a try,” said Miranda.

“No!” shrieked a little stubby woman; “The scientists never listen to anyone these days! The only reasonable thing they’ve done for us is make these silly suits for us to wear! They don’t want to hear anything coming from anyone!!!” With that, the short woman left, along with some other people. Only about six people remained including the two men who spoke out to them.

“Erm… well, I guess nothing will change without the scientists’ help,” said Phil. He turned sorrowfully to Miranda.

“Ok… I guess that’s all we have to say for now… thanks for coming and listening.” Miranda sounded really disappointed. Phil did too and he felt real bad for her. The two men walked up to them.

“Nice job guys. You sure have a lot of hope,” said the tall one, “Don’t lose it!”

“Thanks,” said Phil. The two men walked away.

“Maybe everyone’s right… what if it is too late,” said Phil during the walk back home. Miranda didn’t say anything for a few minutes.

“They probably are. I don’t think there’s another solution that doesn’t involve the scientists’ help.”

“I just don’t want to feel like we’re giving up on hope.”

“I don’t think we are… we just cant think of any other solutions…”

“I guess we just waited too long,” and they walked off, shoulder to shoulder, saying no more.
