The house buzzed with anticipation as Valerie and Colby prepared for the arrival of their second child, Xavier. The nursery had been repainted a soft shade of green, with hints of blues and whites—a calming space that was already filling with baby clothes, blankets, and toys. Every corner of their home now reflected the exciting reality that they were about to become a family of four.
Xander, just over a year old now, was waddling around the living room, clutching his favorite stuffed giraffe. He babbled happily as he explored, unaware of the big change that was about to happen. Valerie watched him with a smile, her hand resting on her swollen belly, where Xavier kicked gently. It was a different kind of preparation this time—less anxious and more seasoned, but still filled with the thrill and uncertainty of what life would be like with two young children.
"How's the crib coming along?" Valerie called from the doorway of the nursery as Colby, determined to put it together himself, worked on the final touches.
"Almost there," Colby replied with a grin, tightening the last few screws. "It's like building it for Xander all over again. Except this time, I'm much faster."
Valerie laughed. "I remember how long it took us with Xander. We kept rechecking everything, making sure it was perfect."
Colby wiped his forehead and stood up, admiring his work. "It has to be perfect for Xavier too. Though I think we're a little more relaxed this time around."
"I guess that's what happens when you've already gone through it once," Valerie said, leaning against the doorframe. "But still, there's so much to do."
They had been preparing for weeks—packing the hospital bag, organizing the baby clothes, and making sure Xander's routine wouldn't be too disrupted once the baby arrived. But with only a few weeks left until Xavier's due date, the to-do list still seemed long.
Colby walked over to Valerie, placing his hand on her belly. "How are you feeling? Ready for round two?"
Valerie chuckled softly, her face reflecting a mix of excitement and exhaustion. "I'm ready to meet him. But I'll admit, I'm a little nervous about handling a newborn and a toddler at the same time."
"You'll do great," Colby said reassuringly. "You've been amazing with Xander, and I'm here to help. We'll figure it out, just like last time."
She smiled, appreciating his support. It wasn't that she doubted herself—it was just the reality of knowing how demanding newborns could be, and how much energy Xander already took up in their daily lives.
That evening, after Xander had gone to bed, Valerie and Colby sat together on the couch, reviewing their checklist one last time. The hospital bag was packed with all the essentials—tiny baby clothes for Xavier, blankets, diapers, and Valerie's favorite robe for her own comfort. They had double-checked the car seat and arranged for Valerie's mom to stay with Xander while they were at the hospital.
"I can't believe we're doing this again so soon," Valerie said, leaning her head on Colby's shoulder. "It feels like just yesterday we were bringing Xander home."
"Yeah, and now we're going to have two little guys," Colby replied, his voice filled with both pride and awe.
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the weight of what was coming settling over them in the quiet of the night. Valerie absentmindedly rubbed her belly, feeling Xavier shift inside. She had spent months imagining what he would be like—would he look like Xander? Would he have the same laugh, the same wide eyes? Or would he have his own unique personality, one that would surprise them in all the best ways?
"I wonder how Xander will react," Valerie mused. "He's so young—do you think he'll understand?"
"I think he'll be curious," Colby said. "But he's such a happy kid. He'll love having a little brother to play with, eventually."
Valerie nodded, hoping that the transition would go smoothly for Xander. They had started showing him the baby things, explaining in simple words that "baby Xavier" would be coming soon. Xander would point to her belly and say "baby," but whether he truly understood was hard to say.
A few days later, Valerie found herself organizing the final touches in the nursery. She folded tiny clothes into the dresser, smoothing out the little onesies and pajamas that would soon be wrapped around Xavier. Colby walked in, carrying a soft mobile that they had chosen together—a gentle arrangement of stars and clouds to hang above the crib.
"Here, let's hang this up," Colby said, reaching up to attach the mobile. It spun slowly, the soft figures dancing in the air.
Valerie smiled, the room finally feeling complete. "It's perfect."
That night, as they lay in bed, Valerie felt a familiar flutter in her belly—Xavier, reminding her that he was almost ready to make his grand entrance.
"We're almost there," Valerie whispered into the quiet, her hand resting over her belly. Colby squeezed her hand in response, both of them knowing that soon, everything would change again.
And though the thought of sleepless nights and balancing life with two little ones felt daunting, there was also a deep sense of joy in the unknown. In just a few short weeks, they would welcome Xavier into the world, and their hearts—already so full—would expand even more to make room for the new life they had been waiting for.
Valerie closed her eyes, breathing deeply as she thought of the future. She could picture Xander toddling around, trying to make sense of his new role as a big brother, and Xavier nestled in her arms, tiny and fragile. It would be chaotic, it would be exhausting, but it would also be beautiful in ways they hadn't even begun to imagine.
Their family was growing, and they were ready.
