The iPad IncidentXander was staring at the iPad in his younger brother Xavier's hands, his fingers twitching with frustration. It wasn't fair. Xavier had been playing for way too long, and Xander, who struggled with ADHD, was finding it harder and harder to keep calm.
"Come on, Xavier! It's my turn now!" Xander said, his voice rising.
"No, I'm not done yet!" Xavier snapped, hugging the iPad closer to his chest.
Xander felt his heart race. His hands balled into fists as the noise in his head grew louder. All the patience he had been trying so hard to hold onto slipped away in a flash.
"Give it to me now!" Xander yelled, reaching for the iPad. When Xavier pulled away, Xander lost control. Without thinking, he shoved his brother hard, knocking the iPad to the floor.
Xavier stumbled, his face scrunching up in shock and pain. "Ow! Why did you do that, Xander?" he cried out, tears quickly filling his eyes.
Just as the commotion hit its peak, their father Colby came storming into the room. He had heard the yelling from down the hall and wasn't in the mood for another fight over the iPad. His face was already tight with frustration from a long day at work.
"What is going on here?" Colby boomed, his eyes locking on Xander, who still stood with clenched fists.
Xander's heart sank as he saw the look in his father's eyes—Colby was angry. Really angry. Without saying a word, Colby grabbed Xander by the arm and pulled him aside roughly. "What have I told you about hitting your brother?! You need to control yourself, Xander!"
Xander's body tensed. His father's words, sharp and stinging, echoed in his mind. The guilt and confusion of not being able to manage his emotions mixed with the fear of his father's anger. "I didn't mean to, Dad, I just—"
"You always say that! You can't keep acting like this every time you get mad!" Colby shouted. His voice was loud, booming in the room, and Xander flinched under its weight.
Just then, Valerie, their mother, hurried into the room. She had heard the shouting and could see the tension. "Colby, calm down," she said, her voice soothing but firm as she placed a hand on her husband's shoulder. "He's trying his best."
Colby looked at Valerie, his anger still simmering, but he took a deep breath and stepped back. "He can't keep hitting his brother like this, Val. He has to learn."
Valerie knelt down in front of Xander, her eyes soft but serious. "Xander, you know it's not okay to hurt people when you're upset, right?"
Xander nodded, his head hanging low. "I know, Mom... but I just get so mad, and I don't know how to stop."
Valerie sighed and gently lifted Xander's chin so he would look at her. "We're going to help you figure that out, okay? But you have to work with us. When you feel like you're going to lose control, come talk to me or your dad. Don't let it get this far."
Xander nodded again, though the lump in his throat made it hard to speak. He glanced at Xavier, who was still holding his arm where Xander had pushed him. "I'm sorry, Xavier."
Xavier, still upset, nodded but stayed quiet.
As the tension began to ease, Valerie stood and wrapped an arm around Colby, pulling him gently back. "We'll handle this together," she whispered to him, reminding him that sometimes, love and patience were the only way to move forward.
Colby sighed deeply, his anger giving way to understanding. He ruffled Xander's hair gently, his expression softening. "We'll figure this out, buddy. But no more hitting, okay?"
Xander nodded again, this time with a small, hopeful smile.
