'aren't you the greatest thing to ever exist?'a lump formed in zaria's throat when she stepped into the kitchen, seeing the rest of her family gathered around the table, doing what looked like setting it for dinner.
they all turned towards her, staring in silence. she stopped in her tracks, waiting for one of them to speak up. "the letters from school came in" zia smiled, holding up her unopened one.
the after school nap seemed to have gotten the best of her because there was not a thought that came to mind when zia spoke. "school?"
"yeah, the team ones" zia pushed another envelope across the table to the side where her sister was standing.
"we called on you like 30 minutes ago, but you were obviously busy doing more important stuff" her mom bitched, almost like she was trying to push the buttons making her mad. "i was doing homework" zaria lied, hoping her smudged mascara didn't give away that she was in fact sleeping and not doing homework.
obviously she was not in the mood for this, so to avoid the situation she grabbed the envelope from the table and turned towards the entrance she just came in. "where do you think you're going?" her mom asked, her voice growing more high pitched as she spoke, something that tended to happen when she was angry. zia lowered her head, already knowing where this was going. "my room" zaria replied bluntly.
she let out a scoff. "don't you see we're eating dinner" she did see it, heard it very well too when her mom slammed the plates against the table. her short temper was so annoying. "i'm not hungry"
"zaria!" aryan, or better known as dad in their household shouted after her as a threat, but she really didn't care. the worst thing they could do was ground her, but that wasn't so bad anyway. "i have a headache!"
her mom scoffed again slumping down on a chair, putting her head in her hands. "gosh, she's such a teenager"
zaria blankly stared at the envelope for 10 minutes. was there even any point in opening it? she already knew what was going to be inside. disappointment.
"fuck it" she whispered to herself, ripping it open. inside was a paper with rows upon rows with names of who made the different teams. what she didnt expect to see was the yellow highlight anywhere on the paper at all.
unfortunately it was under the bold letters spelling 'soccer'. if anything she wanted to make the basketball team.
two soft knocks were heard from outside her door, not caring for an answer before turning the doorknob and entering.
zia walked into the room and sat down on the bed next to zaria. she saw the paper laying in her sisters lap, getting it handed over. "how did you do?" no matter how hard she tried, trying to make eye contact with zia was no use. she was burning a hole in the paper she held. "good" she replied shortly.
"you made everything?" zia's body language told she really didnt like this being the topic, especially since zaria seemed so down by her results, but that didnt stop her from being happy for her sister. she didn't even need to hear her say it, she just knew. "stop, that's amazing, zia!"
"don't act shocked, i know you heard mom shout 'were so proud of you honey' all the way up here" she mimicked their mom's high pitched voice from earlier. "she would've done that even if you failed everything anyway"
"you made the soccer team tho, that's great" zaria however didn't seem too sure, still the same disappointed look on her face. "i really wanted basketball, but whatever" she muttered. "maybe that's better, i heard the coach on the basket team is a jerk anyway"
"and coach watson's not?"
zia eyed the envelope the paper came in. "why do they even bother sending out letters, an email would be so much easier" almost as it was a cue, her phone buzzed. not once, not twice, but three times. "who is it?" the older laney questioned, watching as she pulled her phone out of her pocket.
"it's lynn. we're gonna play soccer at school, you wanna come?" there was not one bone in her body that belived zaria was joining after hearing lynn was going, but she didn't want her sitting all alone either. "i think i'll be just fine here"
"i'm sure she wont mind" she tried again, but zaria wasn't agreeing. "there's no way you actually belive that" she wasn't going to deny the fact that she was right, but she just didn't get it.
"what is it you don't like about her?" she asked. zaria could go on about this for hours, because what was there to like? she hated her ego, the way she dressed, her painfully perfect ponytail and how she always ended up sitting next to her in class, but instead of starting to list all of this, she asked back; "what is it you like about her?"
zia chuckled a little. "no matter what i say, you won't agree"
"she's a bitch" zaria didn't hesitate to say, proving her point. zia only shrugged in response. "whatever you say"
