The following weeks were a blur of strategy meetings, public appearances, and careful plotting. Alexander’s contacts were working behind the scenes to uncover Gerald’s illegal activities, and Sophia found herself drawn deeper into the dangerous game.

She and Alexander had grown closer in ways she hadn’t anticipated. Though their marriage had started as an arrangement, they were now partners in every sense of the word. She could see the weight Alexander carried, the burden of his past, and she respected him all the more for it.

But the tension between them was palpable. The more time they spent together, the more Sophia felt herself falling for him despite everything. And though Alexander remained guarded, there were moments when his icy exterior cracked, revealing a man who, underneath it all, was capable of feeling, of caring.

One evening, after a particularly intense meeting with one of Alexander’s contacts, they returned home to the penthouse, the city lights casting a soft glow through the windows. Alexander was unusually quiet, his face tense.

"Everything okay?" Sophia asked, setting her bag down.

Alexander loosened his tie and sighed, running a hand through his hair. "We’re getting closer to bringing Gerald down, but it’s risky. He’s starting to get suspicious."

Sophia frowned. "Does that mean we’re in more danger?"

Alexander glanced at her, his expression serious. "It means we have to be more careful than ever. Gerald won’t hesitate to strike if he feels threatened."

Sophia swallowed, the weight of the situation settling in. "So what do we do now?"

Alexander walked over to the large window, looking out at the city below. "We keep playing the game. Keep up appearances, make everyone believe our marriage is as solid as ever. And we wait for the right moment to strike."

Sophia joined him by the window, her heart heavy. "And what happens after that? When Gerald is gone?"

Alexander’s gaze flicked to hers, and for a moment, there was a flicker of something vulnerable in his eyes. "I don’t know," he admitted quietly. "I’ve spent so long fighting him that I haven’t thought much about what comes next."

Sophia bit her lip, hesitating before she spoke again. "And us? What happens to us?"

Alexander turned fully to face her, his intense gaze locking onto hers. For a long moment, he didn’t speak, and the silence between them felt charged with unspoken emotions.

"I don’t know," he finally said, his voice low. "But I do know one thing, I’m not letting Gerald destroy what we have. Whatever this is… it’s real, Sophia. And I’m not walking away from it."

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. She had been waiting for this moment, for Alexander to finally admit what she had felt growing between them. But now that it was here, she didn’t know how to respond.

Instead of speaking, she closed the distance between them and kissed him. It was a bold move, but in that moment, she didn’t care. She needed to feel connected to him, to reassure herself that despite everything, they were in this together.

Alexander responded immediately, his arms wrapping around her as he deepened the kiss. For the first time since their marriage began, there was no pretense, no walls between them. It was just them—real, raw, and undeniable.

When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathless. Alexander rested his forehead against hers, his eyes closed. "This changes everything," he whispered.

Sophia smiled softly. "Maybe it’s time for things to change."

The days that followed were a delicate dance of deception. Sophia and Alexander continued to play their roles in public, but behind closed doors, their relationship had shifted. What had started as an arrangement was now something much more, and both of them felt the weight of it.
