Disclaimer: A lot of this first chapter will be made up of similar stuff from the first few chapters of Depore202s now deleted fantasy book. I guess you could consider this book a spiritual successor, I may not be able to capture the comedy or original charm of that book and I'm not going to attempt to but I'm going to try my hardest to tell a good story and hopefully give this story an ending it deserves. (And no I'm not gonna do Depores habit of bittersweet endings)

Humanity was once a primitive species, no more than cavemen banging on rocks and wood to make simple tools, and they were tribal to and insanely entitled to each other's land. Humanity fought amongst itself forming and breaking alliances with each, stealing and murdering each other for pebbles on a beach forming false religions and worshipping pagan gods. Until the Emperor emerged in a shine of golden light, unlike anyone else before him he united humanity brought us out of our primitive state and guided us towards our destined path and gave us the tools necessary to achieve it and enact his will, praise the Emperor the one true god of humanity and always remember Hestorn is Humanity's birthright and we will stop at nothing to achieve it, there is no salvation for those who oppose the Empire Of Humanity and The Emperors vision!

Those were the words sung at every sermon that Y/n Sophocles heard every time he attended church since he was old enough to attend. He cared little for the Priests words though he would not dare speak it less he wanted to be executed right on the spot. Honestly the fact he hadn't been executed yet was a surprise to him after all he wasn't exactly someone who conformed to the church's idea of The Emperor's vision. You see Y/n is what you would call a Blank, someone with zero mana or connection to the immaterial plane, while not everyone possessed the ability to do magic from the immaterial plane they still had a connection to it, it was after all the realm of souls. Y/n however has zero connection to it, he's not the first and certainly won't be the last but many scholars have debated how it's even possible but the conclusion typically boils down to that they are unworthy in the eyes of The Emperor.

Normally a blank would be executed immediately upon discovery, but Y/n was given special permission mainly that his mother was one of the High Lords of Hulos the Capital city in which Y/n presently resides. Y/n knew his mother was an impatient woman who despised him to her core she treated him like a burden which made Y/n wonder why she would go out of her way to make sure his life was sparred from the Church and its inquisitors. Perhaps even the cruelest of mothers still have some love for their child.

Currently Y/n was making his way towards his job, it was a rather underwhelming position of being the empire's librarian, you'd think that'd be an interesting job until you consider that the only book they have in stock is the Lectito Divinitatus the most holy book in the empire and the word of The Emperor. Y/n often wished he could get his hands of The Codex Legionnaire which was a military book he had seen his sister reading, as she was a member of the Daughters Of The Emperor an all female legion of warriors that specialize in special missions of raiding Skaven nests; Because yeah send the women to do the job that causes the most collateral damage possible that's totally not sexist at all, if you're wondering why it's because Skaven and elves have been fighting for as long as anyone can remember and as elves are all female and Skaven can't tell the difference between humans and elves it leads to very misogynistic behavior on their part; that aside as Y/n was making his way towards his job he couldn't help but notice the stares he was getting, Y/n's sitter had enlightened him once when he asked about it that due to his disconnection from the immaterial plane he had an aura about him that made people feel uneasy. Even with that knowledge it didn't make him feel any less insecure about himself.

Finally arriving at his job and entering the small building to relieve his co-worker Rolwick of his shift was quite surprised to find his uncle Romulus standing at the front desk dawned in his armor and was also not surprised that Rolwich had taken off before Y/n came to replace him, it's a violation of imperial labor law but no one is going to listen if he complains anyways. Now that begged the question of what his uncle was doing here.
