Camp Eden was a small, Christian, sleep away camp in the middle of nowhere; somewhere on the border of Tennessee and Kentucky. At most, it could hold about 40 kids, it never had that many attendees. In the summer of 1972, it had about 32 kids, 15 boys and 17 girls.
The camp was fairly self reliant. The kids grew most of the food and sold the surplus in town. It had a small chapel, for Sunday mass, and a large, perfect looking lake. The cabins were small, they could hold about 6 kids each. The boys' cabins were near the tree line, were the camp gave way to dese, dark forest. The girls' cabins were close to the lake, and when it rained, sometimes the cabins flooded slightly.
Near the lake was a large wooden cross, about seven feet tall. The kids were told not to climb on it, because they could get hurt. Didn't stop anyone though, if kids wanna climb something, they'll climb it.
On the first day of summer, The camp counselors were briefed on not letting the kids wander into the woods. After all, they all knew what happens when teenagers were left unsupervised. The counselors listened, but didn't really make any effort to stop kids. Hell, they were sneaking into the woods all the time.
Once the kids arrived, you could tell they'd be an interesting bunch. The boys were suitably rowdy and loud, bar 1 or 2. The girls were a friendly bunch, mostly 16 years of age, except the littlest one in the group. The kids all settled well into the camp. Being 1972, there were no cell phones, no way to contact the outside world except by a phone on the wall in the counselor's cabin. It didn't even work all the time.
Stacy and Ruth immediately got along. The two girls loved to ride horses and swim. Stacy had an affinity for gardening, and roses were her favorite flower. Ruth loved the pretty embroidered clothes Stacy constantly wore. Stacy also became close with Adeline, a sweet girl only a few months shy of turning 16. She was the smallest and the most reserved. Ruth enjoyed the two girls' company. Stacy and Adeline got along well enough, both enjoyed flowers and art. John enjoyed being friends with everyone. He was a football player and one of the kindest people ever. Him and Stacy got along amazingly, both of them enjoyed sports. Daniel was soon added to the group.
On the first campfire one of the counselors asked what made everyone want to spend the summer here?
John said he wanted to take a break from his town.
Ruth was here to make advances on her bible study.
Daniel and Stacy were both forced to spend the summer here.
Adeline said her parents wouldn't let her go anywhere else.
The campfire continued well into the night and was enjoyed by everyone. Adeline was tired quickly but toughed it out. The little group enjoyed the opening event.
About three weeks later, a girl named Emma disappeared. The counselors didn't want to worry the kids, so they didn't say anything. They didn't call the police and they assumed Emma would show up again. In one way, she did.
Emma's arm was found on the edge of the forest. It was brutally ripped from her torso, if the torn skin was anything to go off of. The police said it was probably a wolf or something.
A boy disappeared the next week. They found his leg, in a similar spot. Now the counselors were getting worried. Two campers dead in two weeks was... unsettling.
And the worst was yet to come.
