Breath of... Evil?

I blinked out of my trance as I felt Qibli grab my hand and shout at Cyclone to get a move on. The thought of Leopard controlling the world made my heart sink to the pits of my stomach. Was this all my fault? I did lead him here, so I felt the guilt gnawing at the last sane part of my brain.

"Well, we can't just leave the vines here unprotected!" I suddenly had the heart to say, but I didn't have audible defiance to back it up. Besides, I was uncertain myself.

"If you want to stay, you can," Sundew scoffed with an eye roll. "Heads up, though, you'll die."

"Yeah, but if we don't, the whole world will have to pay for my mistake!" We thudded down the spiraling stairs at an astonishing rate, Sundew and Willow right on our heels as they carried heavy backpacks. Fathom came back down from whatever floor he was on but with an additional member giggling in his arms. An adorable girl who seemed far too happy considering our situation, with the same dark skin complexion as Indigo but the blueish hair color of Fathom, dangled comfortably from one of Fathom's arms, giggling uncontrollably. She seemed to be five or six.

"Did you get Guppy's things?" Indigo asked as the toddler was quickly passed to her, the two exchanging a human for a bag.

"What I could find," he answered with a curt nod.

"How do I open this damn thing?" Swordtail loudly cursed. He had crossed the large area of pure marble floor to the front door. Qibli also quickly dragged me forward and past the glass water fountain. We stopped short as we reached them.

"Step aside, morons!" Sundew shouted as she and Willow also caught up. Indigo and Fathom, as well as their daughter Guppy, completed the circle around the already anxious Luna.

"There's a specific code to allow this door to open," Willow hurriedly explained as Sundew pushed past all of them to get to the mechanics on the door. And although things were relatively quiet now, I knew better than to get fooled by something as painfully obvious as the facade of normalcy.

"Shit—Fathom, did you change this thing or what?" Sundew mumbled, jabbing and smacking at the numbers.

"What? No." Fathom stepped up and gently brushed her to the side. "Lemme try." And it didn't work for him either. Just the loud blaring of an incorrect code being entered echoing through the room.

Cyclone let out a breathy laugh. "Great. Do you guys just carry misfortune around like a necklace?"

"I don't understand!" Indigo cried, clinging tightly to Guppy. "If none of us changed it, then how come it won't open? It's been the same for years. And even if someone did change it, we'd all be notified!"

As the attempts continued, I felt my heart sink further and further down. Were we really trapped in there with no escape? If the Breath of Evil were to be unleashed right then and there, we wouldn't stand half a chance.
