I stared at myself in the mirror as I slid on the tuxedo jacket that the servants had left out for me. I never really got used to having people wait on me. We only use this house for the holiday celebrations, other than that we have a countryside home where we all spend most of our time. I straighten up my jacket and fix my hair as I hear the door open and close. I see my twin brother Rygar leaning against the door in the same outfit as me. He stands up straight and walks over to where I am standing in front of the mirror.
" I hate these events." He sighed as he looked at himself, fixing a stray hair falling on his forehead. My brother and I were identical twins, our parent's firstborns. We are 6'4" with hazel eyes, brown hair, and tan skin. To separate ourselves, we got entire arm sleeve tattoos this way, people could tell the difference, but today, we covered those sleeves up and wore the same tux as sleeves for our mother. All I wanted to do was be outside flying; our order is a dragon, just like our fathers. I loved to be in the sky, flying over everything, above the bullshit.
" I know it will be over quickly," I say, shoving him. " What time are the girls coming here?" He asks, turning around to face me. I checked my atlas before replying, "6 pm; I told them to be on time." I say, tossing it back on my bed. "Doesn't matter what time they arrive; Mom will still hate them," Rygar says, grabbing a seat on the end of my bed. "She doesn't hate them; she just has hopes that one of us will end up with Elara," I say before grabbing a spot beside him. "Elara is crazy, and everyone here knows it!"Rygar says, holding a flask from his pocket and taking a swig. "She isn't crazy; she has a gift that no one has understood for centuries," I say before ripping it out of his hands. "Whatever, man, let's just hope that her coming back means the voices are all gone," He says, yanking it back and putting it into his pocket. I sigh, looking down at the ground, hoping the same thing.
A knock on the door comes, opening up to a butler. "Sir, your dates have arrived," he says, standing in the entryway. I stand up and pull Rygar up with me. " Let's hope things just go smoothly," I say, heading towards the butler.
Later on in the night
We sat in the drawing room for an hour, drinking and hanging out. I was nervous at the thought of seeing Elara again. The last time I saw her in this room was when she had her meltdown, and I had to carry her back to the adults. Since she went to the Vampire Academy, she wasn't allowed outside visitors or contact with anyone to contain her gift. I always thought it was bullshit; she wasn't crazy; this was just something no one understood.
"Right, babe?" I hear a female voice say, snapping out of my fog, realizing my date was talking to me. "Ughh yeah yeah sure," I say, pretending to know what she is talking about. Rygar looks over, giving me a what the hell look. I mouth that I am all good before putting my arm around Celaria.
I pretend to listen and enjoy the conversation with her for a few more minutes before the wooden doors slide open. I look over to see if it's Elara, but it's just her brother, Kale, who grabs a seat next to Azura and starts making out. "Kale, I thought today was Elara's entrance back into this society?" Ender asks, pushing Kyle off him as they roughhouse. "Uhh yeah, she is here; Augustaline got to her first," Kale says through kisses with Azura. "My girl gets the best of people," Ender says, tossing a quick laugh before returning to what he was doing.
It wasn't more than five minutes before the doors pushed open again, and Augustaline walked in, pulling behind her Elara. She nearly took my breath away, looking at how beautiful she was in her red dress, which perfectly hugged her curves. I let out a quick cough, which caught the attention of Rygar, Celaria, Zandera, and Elara. I look at her crystal blue eyes as she stares between me and Rygar.
She stares at us for a minute before the twins Ender and Kyle break her up. They nearly take her out, jolting me in my seat. She and the twins talk briefly before Kyle takes it upon himself to introduce her to the room as if we don't all know her. Rygar shoots me a look like he is going to cause trouble. As he slides Zandera to the side, he stands up and walks over to where Elara has shifted in the room. As we approach her, she steps back, nearly knocking into Ender and Augustalina. Was she afraid of us?
"Well, Vampire Academy did you well!" I say, breaking the silence and continuing to get where she was. "Yeah, I guess when all you do is train and study, there is nothing else to distract you," she says, looking at Celaria and Zandera. I let out a soft chuckle, which didn't draw Celaria's attention as she looked at me with hearts in her eyes. I wasn't into Celaria, but Rygar liked Zandera and asked me to wingman him tonight.
I look back to Elara, who is now taking the room in with her eyes; I wonder if she remembers the last day she was here. Before I could ask her any more questions, she broke her fog and made eye contact again, making me draw a blank. At that very moment, a butler came through the doors, announcing it was dinner time. Elara turns to Augustaline, who is ripping her arm off to follow her. Does Elara remember anything from that day?
