Trick or treat

Kai struggled to juggle a box, her backpack, a jacket, and Nicky, who clung to her neck, giggling with excitement as they approached Billie's front door. She tried to knock with her foot, balancing everything awkwardly.

Nicky's little voice was full of joy. "I'm so excited!" he squealed, snuggling into Kai's neck.

Kai smiled, her heart warmed by his enthusiasm. "I'm so happy you're excited," she said, adjusting his weight on her hip while trying to keep the box from slipping.

The door flew open, and there stood Billie, her hair still damp from the shower, her skin dewy and glowing under the soft light. She wore a loose tank top and shorts, looking effortlessly comfortable, and Nicky's eyes lit up at the sight of her.

"Billie!" Nicky shouted, squirming in Kai's arms, reaching out for Billie as if he couldn't wait another second to be with her.

"Hey, Nicky!" Billie responded with just as much enthusiasm, quickly scooping him out of Kai's arms. She pulled him into a tight embrace, smiling as he buried his face in her shoulder. "I missed you!" he mumbled into her skin, holding on as tight as his little arms would let him.

Billie's heart melted at his words. She looked over at Kai with a soft pout, touched by his affection. "I missed you too, cutie," she cooed, giving him a gentle squeeze.

Noticing how much Kai was juggling, Billie shifted Nicky onto her hip and reached for the box. "Here, let me help," she said, grabbing it before it could topple. "Happy Halloween!" she added playfully, her grin wide as Kai stepped inside, nudging the door shut behind her with her foot.

"Happy Halloween," Kai replied, leaning in to give Billie a quick peck on the lips.

Nicky, still perched on Billie's hip, scrunched up his nose in exaggerated disgust. "Ewww," he groaned, making both Billie and Kai burst into laughter.

"You want to go up to my room?" Billie asked, her question directed more at Kai, though Nicky immediately jumped in with his excitement.

"Yes!" Nicky shouted excitedly, his eyes wide with anticipation.

Kai chuckled, amused by his enthusiasm. "That sounds good," she said, watching the way Billie and Nicky interacted. The connection between them was so natural, and it made her heart swell a little.

Billie didn't waste a second, sprinting up the stairs with Nicky in her arms, his laughter filling the house as Kai followed behind, her smile growing with every giggle that escaped him. The way Billie made him so happy, so effortlessly, reminded Kai just how special their bond was.

When they reached Billie's room, she playfully tossed Nicky onto the bed, earning another burst of laughter from him. He rolled around, kicking his feet as he giggled, completely lost in his own joy.

"Are these the costumes?" Billie asked, holding up the box and raising an eyebrow at Kai with curiosity.

"Yup! I tried my best to get everything we needed to look like real dinosaur explorers," Kai said, a glimmer of excitement in her voice as she opened the box, her eyes bright.

The first thing Billie pulled out was a realistic green T-rex costume, clearly for Nicky. "Whoa, this is awesome!" she teased, holding it up for Nicky to see. "Is this yours?" she asked with a playful grin, knowing the answer but loving how excited he was.

Nicky, full of energy, scrambled onto his knees and crawled toward Billie. "Yes! It's a T-rex because your favorite dinosaur is T-rex!" His voice was filled with pride, as if remembering that little fact about Billie was his special secret.

Billie's heart melted all over again. She couldn't believe Nicky remembered their random, light-hearted conversation from weeks ago. "I do like T-rex," she chuckled softly, moving the costume aside as she shot Kai an impressed look.
