Chapter 10
As night fell, they settled into the camper. Diana had thrown together a quick dinner using some supplies they'd picked up earlier, and the two ate outside, under the stars. By the time they finished, the air had cooled, and they retreated back into the camper to get ready for bed.
The small space suddenly felt even smaller. Diana stood at one end, holding her pajamas, while Yeon Jun hovered by the kitchenette, trying to look casual as he adjusted his blanket on the couch.
"So, you're really going to sleep on that tiny couch?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yep. It's all good. I'm flexible." He flashed her a thumbs-up, trying to make it look comfortable. It wasn't.
She sighed. "It's ridiculous. The bed's big enough for both of us."
Yeon Jun hesitated. "You sure you're okay with that?"
Diana shrugged. "We'll just use the pillows as a barrier. Easy."
He eyed her, still uncertain. "Alright, but don't blame me if I end up taking all the covers."
"Oh, please. I'm claiming most of the bed space anyway." She stuck her tongue out at him before turning to change into her pajamas.
As they settled in, they arranged the pillows between them like a wall. The camper swayed slightly as the wind picked up outside, and the sound of the waves lapping against the shore filled the air.
Diana closed her eyes, shifting to get comfortable. "Well, goodnight, roomie."
"Goodnight, roomie," he replied, staring up at the ceiling. This isn't weird at all, he thought. Just two strangers sharing a bed with a pillow wall.
But as the minutes ticked by and the wind outside grew stronger, Yeon Jun found himself staring at the pillow barrier, his mind drifting back to their conversations. How did I end up here—sharing a bed with someone I barely know and feeling completely at ease?
On the other side of the pillow wall, Diana lay still, her eyes open. Her mind was buzzing with thoughts she couldn't quite pin down. It's just one week, she reminded herself. Just a week with this charming, annoying, and strangely endearing guy who might just be exactly what I needed.
She reached up, running her fingers along the edge of the pillow wall, feeling the softness of the fabric and the warmth of the moment. It's just one week, she thought again, but this time, she wasn't sure if she was trying to convince herself.
Outside, the ocean whispered its secrets, and the two drifted off to sleep, separated only by a thin line of pillows and the unspoken truth that both were ignoring: they might have just found something they weren't expecting.
The next morning, as the sun peeked over the horizon, Yeon Jun was already up and grabbing takeout coffee and a small mountain of cake slices from a quaint little café. When he returned to the camper, he found Diana still sprawled out in bed, the early light catching in her hair.
He waved the coffee under her nose. "Wake up. I've got breakfast."
She groaned, her eyes fluttering open. "I smell caffeine. You really do know how to wake a girl up."
He grinned. "Glad to see you're awake. Also, you look cute when you sleep."
"Obviously. I was born cute." She sat up, rubbing her eyes as she took the coffee.
"Wow, modest too," he teased.
Diana winked. "It's not my only quality."
He laughed and held up the bag. "And for the grand finale—cake. Ten different flavors."
Her eyes lit up, and she practically snatched the bag from his hands. "You're my new favorite person."
"I try." He watched her dig into the cake, amused by how excited she was. "So, what's the plan for today?"
"Eat cake, drink coffee, wallow in self-pity," she replied with a mouth full of cake.
Yeon Jun shook his head, his expression mock-serious. "Uh-uh. I've got a better idea. Let's go on a road trip."
Diana paused mid-bite, raising an eyebrow. "A road trip?"
"Yeah, why not?" he said, grinning. "We've got a camper, and we might as well make use of it. Let's hit the road, explore the coast, and do something fun."
She eyed him skeptically. "Do you even know how to drive this thing?"
He rolled his eyes. "Yes, I have a license. And I was planning on traveling anyway. I'll show you around, teach you some Korean, and we'll see where the road takes us."
She hesitated, but then her grin matched his. "Alright. What the hell. Let's do it."
With the camper loaded up, they set off down the road. Diana was in the passenger seat, flipping through a Korean phrasebook and practicing out loud while Yeon Jun steered them along winding coastal roads.
"I am from Botswana. Nice to meet you," she read aloud, her pronunciation slow and deliberate.
Yeon Jun glanced at her. "You know no one actually learns a language from a book, right?"
"Well, my Korean teacher refuses to teach me properly," she shot back.
He laughed. "Fine. What do you want to know?"
"How do I say 'I am very pretty'?"
With a completely straight face, he replied, "I am an idiot."
She repeated it enthusiastically, with a smile. "I am an idiot!"
He chuckled. "Say it with confidence. You were born pretty, right? Make sure everyone knows."
Diana stuck her head out the window and yelled at the passing cars, "I am an idiot!"
Yeon Jun laughed so hard he almost veered off the road. "Perfect!"
