Chapter 2

Chavi

Our eyes locked, He looked at me as if he had sensed something. He must have because that's how he is, whenever there is anything wrong with me he can always sense it with just one look at me but we didn't talk, he pulled a chair for me.

"Beta, are you excited to be a part of our family ?" Uncle asked in a very polite tone.

"Yes, uncle" I replied in a soft tone. They got busy with their own conversations and there was so much going on inside me but I didn't know what to do. I finally have the opportunity in my hands for which I waited years. I will have to do something I can't let it all slip by but what can I do, everyone is so excited about the marriage. I looked around to realize Karthik was staring at me as if he was trying to figure out his next move in chess.

I quickly looked away to make sure he couldn't read any expression on my face, As I turned, Bhai sa was sitting next to me. Oh my God, yeah I can talk to him, maybe he can help me to convince baba(father).

Yeah I'll have to make an excuse to get him somewhere private, so we can talk. It took me a minute to come up with the excuse.

"Bhai sa, why did you practice swords without me today" I said in a kind of disappointing tone.

"Chavi, you were still sleeping and Karthik had challenged me for a fight, so I practiced with him"

"But it's still unfair, how about we practice now." as I said and turned, I couldn't help but notice the disappointed expression on my father's face. He must be disappointed that I am talking about a fight in between my marriage discussion.

"Sure, you kids can go and practice, either way me and your baba still have to go and check on the puja pandal (place where the tradition will be performed)." uncle said in a funny way and got up to leave with baba. Karthik stood up too to leave.

"Karthik beta you stay with Chavi and Raj", uncle said and he left with baba and three of us were left behind. Neither of us moved or uttered another word for a few minutes as we just watched them walk away.

"Ok, so let's go and practice" Bhai sa said, finally breaking the ice, but I was still disappointed because Karthik was not a part of the plan. But I stood up and we were about to enter the chetra (space to practice). I turned to look at him but He was already looking at me. I wonder if he broke his stare at me even for a second since he saw me today.

"Chavi". Karthik said, still looking at me.

"yeah" I broke the eye contact

"you go inside with Raj, I will come in a few minutes", I don't know why he said that but it was still in my favour.

"ok sure" I said in a bit of an uplifted voice. Not sure if I was able to hide my happiness in it but then I quickly followed Bhai sa to the swords room. Now we were alone but I couldn't find the right words to start the conversation, I don't know how he will react but I need to be quick Karthik can return at any moment. It took me a few minutes, but I finally gathered the courage.
