The door clicked shut behind Damian, leaving Maya alone with her racing thoughts. She glanced at the silver ring he had placed on the table, its presence like a dark omen. The fear swirling within her was soon replaced by a steely resolve; she refused to be broken by this man.
Maya stood and paced the room, searching for an escape route, but the heavy curtains and locked doors only mocked her attempts. As she turned, she caught sight of her reflection in a mirror—a wild-haired girl with determination in her eyes. She couldn't afford to lose herself, not now.
The door swung open again, and Damian stepped back in, his expression unreadable. He held a large envelope, which he placed on the table with a soft thud.
"Time to discuss your future," he said, crossing his arms as he leaned against the doorframe.
Maya's heart raced at the prospect. "You mean your future," she shot back, refusing to show any fear.
He raised an eyebrow, unfazed by her defiance. "This isn't just about me. It's about you too. I need you to understand the terms of our arrangement."
"Arrangement?" Maya scoffed. "You mean your kidnapping?"
Damian chuckled softly, but there was no humor in his eyes. "It's more complicated than that. I've given you a choice, whether you realize it or not."
"What choice? You're holding me against my will!" she exclaimed, frustration spilling over.
He straightened, his tone shifting to one of authority. "I'm offering you protection. This world can be dangerous for someone like you, and I will ensure you are safe as long as you stay here."
"Safe?" Maya echoed, incredulous. "Is this your idea of safety? Kidnapping me and locking me in?"
"Safety comes with rules," he replied coolly, motioning to the envelope. "Sign this, and you will be my wife. I'll keep you protected, and you'll have everything you need."
She hesitated, glancing at the envelope. "What if I refuse?"
"Then you'll be left to fend for yourself," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "I cannot guarantee your safety outside these walls."
Maya felt a chill run down her spine at his words. "So, what? You think I'm just going to sign away my life?"
Damian stepped closer, his gaze locking onto hers. "I'm not asking for your life, Maya. I'm asking for your obedience. You'll see that this isn't as horrible as it seems."
"Why would I ever trust you?" she replied defiantly.
His expression softened slightly, but the intensity in his eyes remained. "You don't have to trust me, but I suggest you consider the alternative. I don't make idle threats."
Maya stared at him, her heart racing as she weighed her options. "You think this is going to work? That I'll just accept my fate?"
"I think you'll come to understand your place here," he said firmly. "Once you sign, you will be safe from those who wish to harm you."
"I'm not afraid of those people. I'm afraid of you," Maya retorted, standing her ground.
Damian's jaw tightened, but he remained composed. "Fear can be a powerful motivator, Maya. It can also be a tool for survival. Use it wisely."
She scoffed, crossing her arms. "And what makes you think I'll ever be comfortable here? You're a monster."
He studied her for a moment, an unreadable expression on his face. "Maybe. But I'm your only option right now."
Maya's thoughts raced. She wanted to fight him, to scream and resist, but the reality was sinking in. She needed to survive, and she had to think strategically.
"Fine," she said finally, though her voice shook. "I'll look at the contract, but that doesn't mean I'll sign it."
Damian smiled slightly, as if he knew he had gained some ground. "That's a start."
He slid the envelope toward her, and she reluctantly opened it, scanning the document. It outlined her responsibilities, expectations, and, disturbingly, his demands. It felt wrong, like shackles disguised as promises.
"What if I don't agree to your demands?" she asked, looking up at him defiantly.
"Then we'll negotiate," he replied, his tone smooth but firm. "But remember, Maya, I always get what I want."
Maya felt a shiver run down her spine, realizing just how dangerous this man could be. "I'm not going to make this easy for you."
"I wouldn't want it any other way," he said, his voice low, a hint of challenge in his tone.
She glared at him, determined to hold onto her sense of self. "You may have taken me captive, but I won't let you control me completely."
"We'll see about that," he replied, his eyes glinting with something unreadable.
As Damian turned to leave, Maya clenched her fists, vowing to find a way out of this nightmare. The ring still lay on the table, a symbol of everything she despised about her situation. She would not be broken by him—no matter what it took.
