The next morning dawned bright and clear, yet Maya felt an undercurrent of tension lingering in the air. The dinner from the night before still echoed in her mind, particularly the way Damian had reacted to the guest's disrespect. It was a reminder that his world was far from ordinary and that danger lurked in every corner.
After breakfast with Rosa, Maya found herself wandering through the mansion, her thoughts racing. She had been thinking about what Eliza had said regarding navigating this new world and the need to be careful.
As she explored, she stumbled upon a room at the far end of the hall. The door was slightly ajar, and her curiosity pulled her closer. Pushing the door open, she discovered a dimly lit room filled with various objects—a stark contrast to the rest of the house's elegance. Weapons hung on the walls, and a large map of the city was spread out on a table, marked with various symbols.
"What are you doing in here?" Damian's voice startled her from behind.
Maya jumped, turning to face him. "I—uh, I was just exploring."
His expression was unreadable as he stepped into the room. "This is off-limits for a reason. It's not a place for you to wander."
"Why not? It's my home too now," she challenged, her heart racing at the defiance in her tone.
Damian moved closer, his presence overwhelming. "It's dangerous, Maya. This room contains information and tools meant for protection—not for you to toy with."
"Why do you keep treating me like I'm fragile? I can handle the truth," she insisted, feeling a surge of determination.
"It's not about fragility. It's about keeping you safe," he replied, his voice firm but softened by concern.
"Safe from what? The truth?" she asked, frustration bubbling up. "I can't just pretend that everything is fine while I'm trapped in this life."
He regarded her for a moment, his expression wavering. "There are things in this world you can't unsee. And I want to shield you from that, at least until you're ready."
"Ready for what? To be your wife in name only?" she challenged. "I want to be more than that. I want to understand."
Damian hesitated, then stepped back, his eyes filled with conflict. "Fine. But if you're going to know the truth, you need to understand the risks involved. This life isn't just about elegance and parties. It's filled with darkness."
"Show me," she replied, her voice steady. "If I'm going to be part of this, I deserve to know everything."
With a heavy sigh, Damian nodded. "Alright, but I can't promise it will be easy. You need to trust me, and that trust must be mutual."
Maya felt a rush of exhilaration mixed with anxiety. "I'm ready."
As he led her through the room, he began explaining the significance of the weapons and the map. "This is the city, but it's not just any city. It's a battleground. Various factions are vying for power, and our family is one of them."
"Factions?" she echoed, absorbing his words. "What do you mean?"
"Criminal organizations, rival families, and people willing to do anything to climb the ladder," he explained, his tone serious. "They're ruthless, and they don't play by the rules."
Maya's stomach twisted at the implications. "And you're part of this?"
"Yes," he admitted, his expression somber. "I didn't choose this life, but I was born into it. And now, I have responsibilities."
"Responsibilities that involve keeping me safe," she said, piecing it together. "But what if I become a target because of you?"
"That's why you need to stay close," he said, his gaze intense. "When you're with me, you're protected."
