"What happened Karthik?" baba asked in a curious tone.
"Dad it's about Chavi,"
"Oh then you should have asked Arvind and Raj too"
"No," I should just clearly tell them, "there is something I want to discuss with you first" I said in a very serious tone.
"Ok", I think he had realized the depth and as his face expression changed completely.
"Dad, I can't marry Chavi, not right now. She needs time and... and I..."
He must have noticed something and kept a hand on my shoulder, "Today when I saw Chavi closely, she did look a bit upset and lost. Is she.. is she in love with someone else. Because you both know you are engaged, and I won't accept this nonsense. I'll talk to Arvind right now"
"No. No Dad. You are getting it completely wrong, it's not like that she wants to study further." it came out in a complete flow
He started laughing, "oh it's such a small thing, she can continue to study after marriage. She is like my daughter. I never stopped shikha from pursuing further education so why would I stop Chavi. I don't have any issues, she can continue her studies." It made me sigh a bit of relief, at least the first thing was clear, but that's thing her dream is to study from DITM
"Dad that's not it, She wants to pursue her masters from Delhi". His expression changed again.
"No that's not possible, there are many colleges and institutes in Rajasthan, then why would she go to Delhi." There was something about Delhi that he always hated, whenever I asked he made an excuse that It was because, Delhi's culture is not good. It's too influenced by western countries but it never made sense to me, there was something else for sure. Because I have taken shikha to several European countries with me, and he never denied. "Then why especially Delhi." He finished.
"Dad, it's her dream"
"you know I would never even send Shikha there, It's not like I am discriminating between Shikha and Chavi" I knew that, I knew it better than anyone else but I tried again, "Dad, please try to understand"
"Enough, my decision is final, ask her to focus on this marriage" His words were set in the stone but I can't give up. I closed my eyes and pictured Chavi's sobbing face. It was enough for me to not give up.
"Dad, you made the decision of my marriage but I never questioned you, you made the decision for my position at the company and I never questioned you, but today for the first time I am making a selfish request, please dad, please let her study from Delhi"
"Karthik, Delhi is not a nice place." he turned his back, making sure that I don't read any expression on his face
"I know you have something against Delhi," He turned and looked me in the eyes "but ple..." he cuts me in between "No, I can't agree to this."
"Dad I won't marry Chavi until she completes her studies." He looked at me shockingly but I continued, "I know you can't go back on your words, and as your son I can't either. You have given your word to Uncle that I'll marry Chavi and I have given my word to Chavi that she will study from Delhi. If You want me to keep your word then you will have to help me to keep my word." I tried sounding as polite as possible.
"You are talking back at me, do you even realize that, what's wrong with you Karthik. You are not even married to her yet and you are arguing with me for her." Oh no that's not how I wanted this conversation to go.
