The Disappearance of Drake Matthews

OVER THE PAST YEAR, Drake had fashioned his grief into a sword. He desperately collected all the rage, fear, and suffering that stemmed from the abuse to turn into a weapon of destruction. He used it to strike down his mother, over and over again, in his head until he had imagined every possible way to kill her.

That night, when Drake had stopped his sister from killing Jeanine, something inside him had broken. Maybe the regret, the guilt he felt after ripping away Tempest's only chance of freedom, was what turned him into an unrecognizable ghost.

Tempest was always the brave one, the hero who faced danger head-on while he watched from the side. It was his own cowardice that betrayed him.

What if we couldn't get away? What if they find us? Will we be executed? Those thoughts plagued his judgment, causing a moment of weakness he would never recover from.

Tempest never forgave him, and that fact was still true a year later. He changed for the worse, and so had his relationship with his twin. The guilt consumed him, and suddenly, Drake could do nothing but grieve.

His action had forged a chasm of anger between them. They were still close, but the chasm went deep down into the earth's core. The continent of their love had split in half, slowly filling the space with water until they were on opposite sides of the world. Neither had the willpower to brave the lengthy journey.

All Drake could do was watch as they were pulled away from one another.

The sword guided him through the long days and lonely nights. Tempest had stopped sleeping in his room, which only left him alone with his thoughts. More often than not, he would be away from the Matthews household. He had found the bravery to sneak out during one of those lonely nights. Since then, his adventures only grew.

His newfound courage had left a sour twinge in Tempest's mouth.

Over the past year, Tempest had fashioned her grief into a stone fortress. Built from her hatred and agony, glued together by blood and tears. No sword could penetrate her borders. She was unbreakable, nearly inhuman.

When it came to his sister, his sword of bravery was of no match. It had been nearly six months since Drake had stopped trying to fight his way through her walls.
