Not much is known of the siblings before their life of fame. What if greed wasn't the thing that drove Velvet into desperation to use a troll in the first place? What if there was another reason? A reason she forgot about as the poison of the troll essence started messing with her head?
Floyd learns of this reason.... He also learns that someone has been lying to them the whole time.
Lights were out.
Floyd was alone in the dressing room high on the vanity. Velvet placed the diamond his was in on some sort of holder, preventing him from moving anywhere. He noticed the door was left slightly open to the dressing room...maybe if he could give it one big push.
Floyd began to frantically thrash about. He felt the diamond move.
"Just a little bit more." He said to himself. Again he tried.....PING! He and the diamond went tumbling to the floor. He stood still a moment to make sure no one heard anything......Silence. Good.
It had been one month since all this, since he was captured by the two giant siblings. One month of this constant talent sucking. No more, he thought.
He rolled his way to the door, trying to be as silent as possible inside the diamond. Peeking through, he noticed that both Velvets and Veneers door were open. Great, I have to make sure I'm extra quiet, he thought. He began to roll the diamond slowly....thats when he heard an intensive cough coming from Veneers room. He stopped and moved back, making sure he was out of sight. The coughing stopped for a moment...then it continued, getting worse and worse. The light in Velvets room turned on. He moved out of sight again as she ran out of her room and straight into Veneers.
"Hey, you good?...Oh god, hold on, hold on." He heard her say. He could hear the sound of sheets being folded and unfolded. "Hold on, hold on. Here. Cough up in the trash can." She continued to say. He heard no words from Veneer, only coughing. The curiosity got the best of Floyd.... He rolled his way near Veneers room. He could make out their silhouettes. Veneer was sitting upright on his bed, Velvet sitting next to him. He held a trash can in which he was coughing into. By the corner of the door where Floyd stood were blankets he assumed Velvet had removed from Veneer....they were stained with blood.
"What?" Floyd murmured to himself. The coughing stopped.
"You good?" She asked her brother. Veneer took a couple of deep breaths.
"Yeah. Yeah. All good here sis." He attempted a smile....a weak one.
"That was a lot of blood this time." She said. This time? Floyd thought. Velvet reached over to grab the water that was on Veneers night stand. "Come on, drink up."
"No. I'm good." He gently pushed the water away.
"Veneer. The doctor said you need to be drinking plenty of water and eating the right food for now." She said. She tried to get her brother to drink, but he refused. This was day two of him not wanting ANYTHING to drink ....he was getting worse.
"Have you used the Troll like I told you?" She asked. Floyd was frozen in his steps.
"No...I don't wanna hurt the little guy. He's kinda cute when you look at him no?" Veneer attempted to pursuade his sister.
"They told us to capture the Troll. They told us to use him. They said he'd bring us good luck. Remember, just like the stories when we were kids used to say." She said. They, whose they? Floyd began to wonder who exactly put this idea in their head. "Use the Troll and you'll get better. We're almost to our goal for your treatment too." She finished.
Veneer was sick... and they needed the money. She wanted him to get better and someone told her that Trolls were the answer. That their good luck was the answer. But they were wrong, Floyd couldn't make Veneer better just like that....could he?
"Mom and Dad wouldn't want this..." Veneer said softly.
"Well they're not here anymore! Their fault they wanted to take that stupid business trip!" Velvet screamed.
"....the accident wasn't their fault Vels." Veneer said. He tried to place his hand in his sisters... she tore hers away.
"Well if they wouldn't have gone, then they would still be here wouldn't they! Now we're on our own to raise ourselves with nothing!" She was silent. She glanced at her brother. He just stared down at his hands, no words.
"....Im sorry...." Velvet broke the silence. Veneer smiled at her.
"It's okay....Vels, maybe there's another way? You sing fine without the Troll. We could just practice." Veneer suggested. The vigorous cough came back. Floyd could see the blood.
"Oh god! Here. In here." She said handing him the trash can. Velvet rubbed his back as he coughed...tears began filling her face. This has to work, he has to get better, she thought. He had too. He was all she had. But he couldn't see her like this...weak....he couldn't. This is the third time Veneers sickness returns. When it comes back a third time, there was an 80% chance it was fatal the doctors said. Velvet was determined to make sure Veneer wasn't in the 80%.... No he was going to defy the odds. If they were to make this work, there were going to be some changes around here.
Floyd understood now. But what he couldn't understand was who told them the nonsense about the Trolls. He felt himself being lifted.
"Hey!" He turned to find Crimp picking up the diamond and taking him back to the dressing room.
"If Velvet finds out you heard, you're good as dead!" She exclaimed.
"Crimp let me go to them. I think I can help." He said.
"Sorry, but you have to stay here. This is the only way you can help....without Velvet getting mad." Crimp said placing him back on the dresser.
"Crimp wait!" He called out. But she had left, fully closing the door this time. He could still hear Veneers drastic coughing. He could hear Velvet trying to soothe her brother....he could also hear the pain in her voice.
