Katrina was apparently cursed.  Her mother claimed it was actually a gift, but Katrina was pretty sure it was just so that her mother could deny the fact that it was her fault.  Katrina's curse was actually multiple things. The most annoying one was her hair. It changed color depending on her emotions and was scary vibrant. She had to keep it up in a braid wrapped around her head and wear a hat at all times.   The second "gift" seemed to be that it was really hard to die.  She'd been alive for several years now and was around 119. but still looked only 19.   She also had a couple more... unique, gifts.  For example, when bubbles popped, they whispered secrets of the dead. She could create small illusions and had faint telekinetic abilities.  If someone was about to die, their shadow would separate from their body and give her a hug.  The wind would sing occasionally, and the waves, who spoke, were apparently depressed.  Occasionally, she was able to heal people, but it had limits. She had to feel an emotional connection with the person, and healing came with a price. In short, Katrina had supernatural blood, but Katrina's mom had been such a hoe that she hadn't known exactly what.
Katrina lived in Manhattan in a small apartment. She had a bedroom, a bathroom, a small living room, and a kitchen.  Oftentimes, her friends who didn't live in New York would ask if she'd ever met the Avengers.
"OH Katrina, you live in New York. You must have met the avenger!"
No, Rachel, the Avengers do not visit 'Happy Smiles Coffee'
Yeah, Katrina works as a waitress at the worst coffee place in Manhattan. Which is hard since all coffee sucks in Manhattan. At least the uniforms made hiding her hair easy. They all had to wear these beanies with a smiley face on them, and she could just wrap her braid around her head and stick the hat over top, and bam she was good to go.
Katrina also did some after-work babysitting to help pay rent. The kids, if they were young enough to not tell their parents and be believed, got to see her magic. She would cast small illusions for them or let them play with her hair.  She mainly watched younger kids, young enough that their parents wouldn't believe their tales of their babysitter being magic.  It was fun. And it paid the rent.  And that was good enough for Katrina.
