Lily had finally caught up Maskwell after incredibly long time of him evading her. The emotions coursing through her brain's electricity were equal parts incalculable and inexpressible. The sheer number of travesties that thing... what once she called brother, now sits atop a blood-ridden throne of agony. She wanted nothing more than to seize the notebook from his digits and obliterate it before him. Lily knew he was far away thanks to careful planning, and knew this was prime time to make her dream come true.
She dodged his mindless subordinates patrolling the sidewalks, soon arriving back at the old place she knew once as home. It was long abandoned, with the memories it once held forever scorched by the travesties Max- Maskwell, did unto the people she knew within it. Emboldened by the skeleton engravings on her platinum armor, Lily whisked her cape to the side and trudged forward into the house.
Her heart sank with every step she took, and found herself in the dining room once again, much like she had all that time ago. It's hard to believe how much her life has changed in the past year, but her cautious expression turned to shell-shock upon seeing that horrid, awful mask, gazing back at her.
Lily couldn't even see his face, but she knew that the mask told her everything she knew. That stupid smile and hollow eyes, it haunted her to know that, that thing was the last image many of her family members saw before arriving at a horrible, incomprehensible end, flicked away by the markings of a pencil in a notebook. The sheer power Maskwell held with such reckless abandon, Lily's collected exterior was only possible thanks to the mask she made specfically to mimic the ones created for the masked army.
Maskwell, however, was more cunning than that.
"Looking for this?" He teased sickeningly, holding up that spiral bound monstrosity. The glint of the star had long lost its luster, the green covers dulled with blood and the ceaseless markings of time. There was always, always, another page to fill. Yet, here he was, dangling the book of boundless dominion over the universe loosely with his pointer and thumb. He seemed almost bored by the whole thing.
Lily dared not show any signs of surprise, since that would indicate vulnerability and thereby weakness. Internally, fear agonized her, tearing her to shreds. On the outside, she remained calm, and maintained her breath.
"No," she lied, "I wanted to talk to you."
"Is that so?" He was facing to the side now, looking at a shattered family photo, still hanging on the wall. The darkness of the room obscured their faces, but Lily knew he recognized himself. Somebody she used to know.
"Yes. I refuse to believe you truly think this is the right way to live." She exhaled, but pressed onward, despite suppressing her own emotions. "You know better. You always have."
"And yet you feel the need to lecture me." He stood up, slowly pacing towards her from the darkness. Lily was tense. She wouldn't back up. Not yet.
"Tell me... Lily... do you believe in fate?" the monster was only a few chairs away from her, but Lily's heartbeat can't lie to anyone. The rapid drumming in her chest doesn't have the wit her brain does in masking who she was, and how she felt. It was a primal thump. To escape. To run. To live.
She remained silent, merely facing his way. His fingers tapped along the top of a chair. That was Edwin's chair. Before... before. Maskwell took this golden opportunity to continue talking.
"See, I knew you would do that." He leered, pointing a shaky finger at her. "I knew you would come here. To steal my notebook."
She completely froze. Maskwell paced closer.
"To destroy it."
He stood right in front of her.
"Right in front of me."
