Rhaenyra

The guards opened the doors to the solar of the queen for her and Rhaenyra stepped through. Alicent was sitting near the window, her face turned toward outside like a maiden from a song, sat at the window waiting for her dashing knight to rescue her from the villain. Her mahogany red hair was left unbound in disarray, falling in soft waves and framing her pale, tired face beautifully.

She looked haunted.

It didn't make her look less beautiful, that haunted look of hers.

Rhaenyra had wanted to be that dashing knight once upon a time, to have her ride atop Syrax with her, bring her away from their duties and see the world beyond the Narrow Sea and beyond, to eat only cake and be enough for each of them.

They'd become no one and everyone.

But life had a funny way of destroying youth's dreams, and duty would do of the rest what she pleased best.

" Alicent " it was maybe the first time Rhaenyra had called such since she had married her father, to her face. It was like a dam broke, and she turned around, her haunted gaze fixing on her.

She worked at the lump at her throat, but did not speak for a long while, Rhaenyra didn't dare to come closer.

She wondered how everything had gone so wrong?, Alicent had been the only companion Rhaenyra would've been happy to have at her side, she would not have needed any other lady in waiting and if her husband didn't please her enough Rhaenyra would lay her head in Alicent's lap and listened to her read or speak and the world would've looked bright again.

Instead she and Otto had robbed them of that, all for ambition.

Alicent had not been an ambitious snake, Rhaenyra would've noticed it if she had, but she had played in her father's hand, she had done what he had planned for her, and had used her charm to do it as well.

Did it make her better or worse?, the scar on her forearm burned.

Where is duty? Where is sacrifice? It's trampled under your pretty foot again!

You take my son's eye and to that too you feel entitled!

"Princess," her voice was so warm that for a moment Rhaenyra was back beneath the Heart Tree when they had been girls speaking of dreams and plans and sharing their own fondness to their heart's content.
