I woke up, my gaze blurry as I was resting on a hard pillow

I woke up, my gaze blurry as I was resting on a hard pillow. I grumble as I rub my eyes and then they widen when I hear the soft thumping under my ear.

I'm lying on someone's chest.

I glance up hesitantly and my breath gets caught in my throat when I lock eyes with Ares. "What are you doing?" I mutter.

"Trying to stop you from drooling on me. I'm failing miserably." He says in that annoyingly sexy raspy voice, which is weird because he usually has that after he woke up, but he surely didn't sleep with me. He couldn't, he had a meeting this afternoon.

"I'm not drooling." I grumble, sitting up and flush at the sight of dark spot on his shirt at the chest area, right where I was just a second ago. "Where's Maya?" I change the subject to save myself from the embarrassment.

"In her room, playing with that bastard." He grumbles and I scoff.

"Are you seriously calling your dog, that you wanted, a bastard?" I ask, although a slight amusement in my eyes. This is the first time in a long while that I don't have to watch what I say or how I say it. Ares would never hurt me. Physically, that is.

"Water?" He offers, holding the glass out for me which I take gratefully. I take a few sips before handing it back to him. I'm feeling better, a bit still sore from the crash but nothing a little rest can't fix.

The front door bursts open and in barges Jess and Max. "You bitch." They say in unison.

"How could you go on that trip and dare to get hurt?" Came from Jess.

"You can't do that. Who's gonna keep Ares from ripping my head off if I piss him off?" Whined Max.

Then both of them rushed over and hugged me. I sighed, relaxing into their embrace. "I'm okay." I whisper.

"Of course you are. Mr Romeo here has been taking care of you. Where's his nurse outfit?" Max wiggled his eyebrows into Ares's direction, which received a throw pillow in his face from the grumpy man.

"Ignore him. You sure you're okay? Should I get you something?" Jess asks which I shake my head at.

"I'm okay." I send her a smile. After a few more minutes of them making sure I'm okay they take Maya out for the day, leaving Ares and I alone in his house. I just continue sitting on the couch, awkwardly.

I clear my throat. "Thank you for taking care of me. I owe you one." I say, not looking at him.

He scoffed, putting his laptop away. "I didn't do it so you'd owe me. I did it because that's the basic human decency. I wasn't about to leave the mother of my child alone, my dance partner."

I still refused to look at him and that made him huff in frustration. "Lunch is on the stove." He muttered before getting up and walking upstairs, most probably into his bedroom or study.

I stayed down there, not moving. Obviously Jake is my ex boyfriend now, without having to even discuss that. Angela can have him, I was never good enough for him anyway. Not that I was for Ares.

I nibbled on the skin around my nails until it hurt so I pulled back. I got up and walked into his kitchen, glancing at the stove and my heart just squeezed ten times worse when I saw how he did his best to cook my favorite meal.

Ares didn't like cooking because he wasn't really good in it, and he always hated that there were things he didn't know how to do. Part of always wanting to make his mom proud so she would interact with him.

I took a small portion of the food and slowly ate it while the clock ticked on the wall. I asked Jess to keep Maya with her for the night because I honestly didn't think I would be able to get up in the middle of the night if she has a bad dream, mainly because of the strong painkillers.

Of course Ares is more than capable of taking care of her but I could see the exhaustion in his eyes earlier. He might be able to fool everyone else, but when you have spent years with someone you pick up on their habits. When they lie they tend to do things, for him it was his eyebrows going up just a millimeter.

He came downstairs at 8pm. I was sitting on his couch, legs tucked underneath me. "Thanks for dinner." I muttered and he just nodded.

I watched as he took out a bottle of coke and I furrowed my brows. He never used to drink that. He usually downed his dinner with a glass of scotch or something.

He caught my eye, but neither of us said anything. We just kept staring at each other.

I cleared my throat. "I'll be out of your hair." I muttered, standing up but he strode over from the counter to the couch and put his hands on my hips. My breath got caught in my throat as I slowly glanced up at him. "Your mom is back at home, Maya is sleeping at Jessica's." He said.

I furrowed my brows. "So?" I asked, confused.

"So if something happens to you you'll be all alone. I'll clear out my room. You can sleep there." He said, but I immediately shook my head.

"I don't want to sleep in there." I said, painful memories resurfacing.

He clenched his jaw. "The bed isn't the old one." He said and I almost wanted to scoff.

So he not only changed houses but beds too. Guess he really didn't want any reminder of his past with him.

Ares sent me a glare, like he knew what I was thinking about, and he probably did. I hate how well he knows me.

He didn't give me time to respond before he went upstairs, probably to change the bedding in his room and I sighed, following him upstairs. I leaned against the door as I watched him. "Ares." I called out.

Nothing.

"Ares." I tried again but he still just continued changing the sheets. I walked over and put a hand on his back and he stiffened, I immediately took my hand off.

"What?" He grumbles as he fixed the covers.

"Thanks." I mumble softly and he looked up at me, nodding. "Yeah. Sure. Yell if you need anything." He said before walking out, leaving me out.

I sighed and sat down on his bed and got comfortable after changing into some pajamas. I laid down on his bed and turned the lamps off, slowly drifting off from exhaustion and the painkiller's effect.

Okay, so I know this book isn't as popular as my other one and has noticeably slower updates but I promise I'll edit it once I'm done with the last chapter and then it will hopefully be better. I would really appreciate comments because it's honestly fun to just read them. Have a great day!
