It should've been a quick ride home, but life had other plans for you. Cursing under your breath, you continued to push your bicycle along, contemplating why on earth you had to suffer the long walk home with a flat tire. It was just your luck. How the hell were you supposed to know there'd be broken glass on the sidewalk?
And your bike hadn't been the only victim. The intense stinging sensation in your leg kept reminding you of your misfortune the farther you walked, having left a trail of dark red behind on your now exposed skin. You'd have to patch up this pair of jeans too unfortunately.
The sun was setting behind you, acting as a sort of timer as daylight began to run out, urging you to move faster. You did not want to be out here after dark. Not that you were afraid of the dark but of what could possibly be hiding within it.
As you continued to put pressure on your leg as you walked, the throbbing only grew worse, making you wonder just how bad the cut had been. You had been able to stop the bleeding but were too nervous to rip open more of your jeans to inspect the injury further.
You'd just patch yourself up when you finally made it back home. And by then you'd have no choice but to remove them and look at just how bad it was. You exhaled sharply as you accidentally rubbed the raw skin with the fabric, causing you to stop in your tracks.
You reluctantly peeled back some of the ripped fabric, attempting to get some sort of relief, hoping some more exposure would lessen the pain. But it only seemed to make it worse. You had to let go of the bike's handlebars as you dropped to the floor, gritting your teeth.
You wanted to take a break but the pink and orange hues behind you reminded you why you couldn't. And so you once again reluctantly forced yourself to get back up onto your feet, trying your best to ignore the pain shooting up your leg. You somehow managed to stand but that didn't last long. Stumbling, you mentally prepared for more pain only to feel a hand make contact with the center of your back, steadying you.
"Hey, careful now. You're hurt."
You shouldn't have been so surprised when you turned around to see who had come to your aid. That dark green uniform was recognizable to everyone who lived in this town. And although you were familiar with Furin High School, you had yet to put a name to the faces of these boys.
"I'm fine," you lied, shifting your eyes away from him, suddenly feeling embarrassed. His hand was still at your back, prepared to catch you if you stumbled again.
"But you're not. I can see it in your face."
You bit your lip, knowing you couldn't hide the pained expression that had painted itself onto your features the moment after you went crashing down from your bike earlier. "Well, I..." you managed, unsure why you were so reluctant to accept this boy's offer to help.
"You live down the street not too far from here, right, [Last Name]?" he asked. "Your parents own that bakery at the corner?"
At the mention of your family name, you turned your gaze back to him, this time actually surprised. "You know my name?"
Smiling, he nodded. "So how about it?" He offered his hand to you. "I'm sure your folks will be worried if you get home so late, especially like this."
You finally reached for his hand, grasping it as you attempted to plant your feet firmly on the ground to gain some stability. But all that did was make you wobble again as the intense stinging sensation hit you full force.
Suddenly, you felt yourself being lifted off the ground. His arms cradled you as they settled at your back and underneath your knees, earning some protest from you. "Hey-wait!"
"Hm?" He raised an eyebrow, confused by your disapproval. "You clearly can't walk any more on that leg. Don't worry though I'll come back for your bike later."
You were now grateful that the sun had finally set. The dark shadows from the streetlights that dotted the sidewalk masked the pink that had tinted your features as your face grew warmer the farther, he walked. It felt strange to you. You hadn't been carried like this since you were a young child. But regardless of your embarrassment, you couldn't deny that you felt safe and warm in this boy's arms.
Not wanting to seem rude and ungrateful, you offered your gratitude. "Um, thanks for helping me. I really appreciate it." You mustered a smile as you looked at him, trying to appear somewhat friendly.
He mirrored your expression, answering with, "It's no problem at all."
Curious, you broke the silence again with a question, wanting to learn more about your savior. "This might seem dumb but what's your name?" Despite knowing about Bofurin, you never bothered to learn any names.
"Umemiya," he responded before adding, "Hajime Umemiya."
"Oh, I see." It sounded a bit familiar so maybe you had heard it before but this time you'd make sure to not let his name go forgotten.
"So, I know your last name, what about your first name?" Now it was his turn to be curious.
"[First Name]," you replied, trying to distract yourself from the pain in your leg by focusing on his words. But the intense stinging sensation persisted as he continued forward, earning a sharp exhale from you. This didn't go unnoticed by Umemiya though, who attempted to pull your attention away with his words again.
"Hang in there. We're almost at the bakery."
As you approached the door to your family-owned establishment, you realized all the lights were off. You inwardly groaned. "My parents are probably out on a late grocery run or something," you assumed, reaching into the pocket of your jeans for your key. "I'll let us in."
The tall boy set you down carefully so you could unlock the door. Opening it, you were greeted with a dark and empty bakery. You fumbled for the light switch by the entrance, giving the place light again.
"I can take it from here. Thank you again for your-"
In that moment, you felt yourself tilt backwards. You closed your eyes, bracing for the impact but that pain never came. When you opened them again, you were face to face with him. His arm had quickly wrapped around your waist, stopping you from hitting the back of your head against the counter.
Your face heated up at the proximity as you quickly averted your gaze, mumbling an apology for your clumsiness. He smiled at you before lifting you up with his arm in one swift motion, placing you atop the counter before you could protest again.
"I don't think I can leave you just yet. Where do you keep the first aid kit?"
"Behind the counter, first drawer on the left," you guided him, pointing towards the back of the pastry display.
He returned with the supplies, setting the box down next to you before grabbing a cloth and hydrogen peroxide, pouring some onto it. He tore the fabric of your jeans some more, uttering an apology so he could get better access to the cut on your leg.
Despite the warning he gave beforehand, the stinging sensation increased tenfold when the cloth made contact, almost making you cry out. But you covered your mouth to prevent that, watching as he gently dabbed at the wound. He worked carefully and quickly as he could, hiding the exposed skin with some bandages.
Letting out a sigh of relief now that the worst was over with, you turned your attention back to Umemiya who was returning the supplies to their proper place. "Thanks again. You really didn't have to."
"But I wanted to." There he goes again. That smile of his. He was persistent but in a good way. And admittedly you were disappointed to see him go, his gentle touch still lingering as you waited for your parents to return home.
And when you awoke the next morning, you knew what you had to do. Your movements downstairs managed to wake your mother who found you busy at work in the kitchen. A puzzled look painted her features as she asked why you were up so early before the bakery opened to which you responded with, "There's someone I need to give a proper thank you to."
I hope y'all enjoyed the first one-shot. I'll publish more when I get the chance. Thanks for reading!
