CHAPTER FOUR
Rafe
"I don't know where the hell I went wrong with you, Rafe. I'm going to ask you again where the fuck the money for the generator went? We need that backup generator and you were supposed to order it before the storm."
Dad's eyes darken with disappointment. Nothing out of the ordinary for me. Sarah is the golden child, Wheezie is the baby, and I'm the fuck up. Why should I bother to even try to be anything else?
"They're on back order." I lie.
I know exactly what happened to the money for the generator but will I ever admit that to my old man? Fuck no. I also didn't expect us to need that back up generator seeing as we should have had full power back by now.
Dad shakes his head at me. "You know that Pogue I fired?" I nod and he smirks. "He's got a better work ethic than you. I trust him more than I trust you and I fired him for fucking stealing from me, Rafe. Maybe I should give him his job back and give him every ounce of responsibility that should be yours."
"Don't." I grit through my teeth. "I'll get another damn generator. I swear-"
"Get out of my fucking sight, Rafe."
My hands are drenched with sweat but I clench them into fists anyway as I get up and head back into the house that's just as hot as the fucking porch at this point. Walking into the house I run into Sarah who's smirking at me and following me with her arms crossed.
"I told you that piece of shit bike wasn't worth it."
"What the hell do you know, Sarah?" I go to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water and my keys from the counter.
Slipping my phone from my pocket to check my texts but there's nothing. I don't know what I'm waiting on but my gut tells me something big is happening soon. Or maybe it's because I'm about to hit some point of withdrawal if I don't get my hands on some snow soon.
Sarah sits on the counter and looks at me with her legs swaying, kicking the cabinets below. Rose is going to lose her shit when she catches her doing that or sees the scuffs from her shoes. My stepmom has a strict no shoe rule in the house and Sarah breaks that rule every chance she gets. I'm at the point where I think Sarah just enjoys pissing Rose off.
"I know that I have better friends than you because if Dad gave me the money to get the generator they wouldn't have encouraged me to buy a bike. Or beer. Or whatever else you do. Not my business though."
"You're right. It's not your business." I take a sip of the water. My mouth still dry after but I know it's because I'm on edge. "And what friends do you have? Topper? He's your stupid boyfriend."
"He's your friend and he's a bad one."
"Yet you're dating him."
"Screw you, Rafe."
I flip her off as I turn on my heels to walk out of the kitchen when I hear a disgusting sound coming from the hallway bathroom. I look at Sarah who pushes a finger to her lips and hushes. "It's Wheezie. Don't tell Dad."
I shake my head. "Yeah, like I'm in the position to snitch on anyone."
"Where are you going?" Sarah jumps off the counter and follows me to the door. "Got a hot date?"
"You are the most annoying person to ever walk this planet."
Sarah laughs. "I'm serious. Where are you going? I might need a ride to pick up a friend and if you're going in that direction-"
"I'm not giving your stupid friend a ride."
"She's not stupid first of all."
"If she's friends with you she's got to have something wrong with her. What are her symptoms? Does she paint the walls with her own blood? Talk to pigeons? Come on, Sarah, you don't have friends."
"Why is it so hard for you to believe that I have friends? How about you drop me off at her place and when you're done doing whatever it is you're doing you pick me up. That way you're not stuck giving everyone rides."
I roll my eyes. "Sarah, I'm not a fucking taxi. I'm not even taking the car I'm going on my bike."
"So you're going to the Cut?"
I nod. "Running some errands."
"Errands? In the Cut?"
"Yep." I reach for the door handle and open the door slightly but Sarah slams it shut and leans against the door. "Move, asshole."
"Why? Why can't you tell me what you're doing, Rafe?"
"Because you're my sister and the world's biggest snitch."
"No, that title goes to Wheezie and you know it. She's a certified yapper and snitch. She's the reason John B got fired. I didn't rat him out to Dad, Wheezie ratted to Topper and he went running with his tail between his legs to Dad because well... It's Topper."
I narrow my gaze at her. She blinks and sucks in her bottom lip with puppy dog eyes. Fucking damn it. This girls always knows how to get her way and if I don't bring her to her friend she'll run to Dad and fuck it up.
"Put a helmet on and I'll bring you."
"Really?" She reaches for her shoes that are by the door. "You're the best brother ever." She wraps her arms around me and I push her off instantly.
"Don't fucking touch me. You know I hate that shit."
"Yeah, I know. No touchy rule."
"So why did you touch me?"
Sarah shrugs and then opens the door. Pulling her phone out and dialing to make a phone call. Turning to me and saying, "Because I can." Soon her conversation with her friend starts. "Hey, Rafe is bringing me to your place. We can hang by the dock or something? Maybe go for a walk to get ice cream before he comes to pick me up? He's got the bike so he can't bring us anywhere."
A long pause.
"Yeah that sounds fun, I like that idea. Cool, so I'll see you in a few minutes. Bye."
I hand Sarah an extra helmet and she slips it on over her head and stands there until I get onto the bike. She hops on behind me and holds onto the sides of the seat. I wait a minute before turning the bike on and check my phone one more time before texting Barry that I was popping on over in a few. He reads it and says nothing.
I turn over my shoulder to look at Sarah as she waits patiently.
"So where the fuck am I taking you exactly? Because if I have to go all over fucking Kildare I'm going to be pissed off and I'm making you put gas in my tank."
Sarah rolls her eyes. "Just to the chateau."
"The chateau?"
My sister nods. "Yeah. You know how to get there right?"
"What the fuck is the chateau?"
Sarah scoffs loudly. "Oh my God, Rafe. Really? You don't know shit, do you?"
"Sarah, I'll leave you behind."
A long groan. "Rafe, you're taking me to Alana Routledge's house." Ah, fuck. That girl.
